I remove the nipples and soak them in warm soapy water. If need be, I use a nipple pick to clear them. It's not that hard to do. I don't suggest Hoppes or anything except warm water with dish soap in it. If the nipples are really bad, just replace them. They are intended to be consumable items in the first place.

Kroil comes to mind. Or, even wd40 in a baggie, to start.

It was the flash hole that was clogged, not the nipple.
I bought some dental picks at harbor freight and was able to dig out the flash hole. Then I cleaned everything (several times) with hot soapy water, which worked well.

This is pretty much it. Black powder is the foulest crap there is.....but it does clean up fairly easy.

Dish Soap and Hot water works best.

foolproof black powder cleaning solution.

Equal parts of Murphy's Oil Soap, Hydrogen Peroxide and Rubbing alcohol. This stuff is inexpensive.

Windex works much better than soapy water. The foamy window cleaner from Costco is even better.

Ballistal and hoppes aren't even close to the effectiveness of window cleaners.

Hot soapy water, windex, etc. are ways to clean black powder residue, these sound more like they've been left sitting and are rusted-(?) If that's the case then the normal cleaning methods aren't gonna help and might just add to the damage. If they have been left to sit & rust you should have a pro check them over if you're planning to shoot them.
