I remove the nipples and soak them in warm soapy water. If need be, I use a nipple pick to clear them. It's not that hard to do. I don't suggest Hoppes or anything except warm water with dish soap in it. If the nipples are really bad, just replace them. Windex works much better than soapy water. The foamy window cleaner from Costco is even better.
Ballistal and hoppes aren't even close to the effectiveness of window cleaners.

Hot soapy water, windex, etc. are ways to clean black powder residue, these sound more like they've been left sitting and are rusted-(?) If that's the case then the normal cleaning methods aren't gonna help and might just add to the damage. If they have been left to sit & rust you should have a pro check them over if you're planning to shoot them.Comment
