SAVAGE 99 GURUS?

Hi C&R Junkies,

I'm interested some beautiful furniture for a Savage 99 NOS, listed here on Calguns. Monty butt with Schnabel fore arm. The feller says it fit his 1935 EG 250-3000 perfect, I'd like to acquire it, but I'm unsure if it'll install on my '52 .308 99F without some fitting. Anybody know? Thanks, PAX

I saw that ad.....it is a nice set of furniture. In my opinion, the metal would have to be at least as nice on the gun to make it worth installing that wood.

Is the seller trustworthy? You could give him the full amount as a deposit, try it out, and then sens it back to him if it didn't fit.

You could work out your own deal.....like the seller keeps $10 of the deal for his trouble. Kinda like you are renting to own with right of return.

I have actually done deals like that here on Calguns and they have all worked out great. Last winter, I lent my ice auger to an awesome Calgunner for free.....he left me $100 deposit, and I gave it all back upon return of my auger in good condition. Plus we got to meet up and talk guns and fishing and network.

The stock set is gorgeous, and I think the Schnabel fore arm looks great on the 99s, very classic. Factory units seem a bit thinner than the one being offered, could just be the pictures. It would see annual field use in the Sierra, or not. Tougher and tougher to get away these days.

So far I've been fortunate in my dealings here, done very good, met some great folks, a couple in my own town, others within striking distance. The guy with the stock is to far away to try and hook up with and physically see if it'll fit, plus it's opening weekend and too late in the game for experimentation on my huntin rig. PAX

All 99's in "modern" calibers (308, 243, 358, etc) are different actions than the original 1899 and pre war 99s. They are rated for higher pressures and have V instead of square barrel threads. Other differences as well like types of safety, some coil springs, detach mag, barrel contour, solid frame or take down, etc. Not 100% certain, but he wood from a pre war gun may not fit.

Savage 99's had three types of frames, Type I, II, and III. Tang length is the difference. Forearms too, takedown or solid frame, both have differences.
