    45-70 vs 45-90

Would it be possible to safely shoot a 45-70 in a 45-90?? I already own a Pedersoli 1874 Sharps in 45-70, but wondered if I could run the ammo in a 90 without messing things up??

I dont think it can really hurt, wont be too good on accuracy. Since this is a rimmed cartridge it " should " headspace.

The only thing i can see wrong is maybe nicking the bullet when it fires off the " dead space " from the case being shorter.

Probably the same effect of shooting 38 special off a 357 mag

Won't hurt anything, but accuracy will be less than stellar.
Two things working against that, the freebore jump the bullet has to make, and bullet weight vs barrel twist. I don't know what Pedersoli uses for twist, but the 45/70 originally had a faster twist rate than the 45/90 because it used a longer heavier bullet. A 45/70 with a bullet weight of 300 to 350 grns would work, but I don't know if you could seat the bullet out far enough to overcome the the freebore.

You'll get a crud ring in the chamber that will make it impossible to chamber a 45-90 cartridge until it gets cleaned out.

I tried it once and all the bullets tumbled. 1-36 inch twist is
Too slow to spin even a 300 grain.

1:18 is what I've found, and with the longer 28", 32" and 34" target bbls it should be enough to stabilize.

I guess the best thing to do is pick up some 45-90 brass and load up some 535 grain with 1 1/2 swiss. I have everything else that's needed...

I would use TrailBoss instead of the Swiss, precisely what Hodgdon made it for.

Interesting stuff, and might give it a try on the 375 H&H. I don't see any load data in the PDF for the 45-70 but it should work for a smokeless load. Right now I have a lot of Swiss...

You load it just like BP, just fill the case completely but don't compress it.

                      This ^^^
Hodgdon gives a max load of 13grns for 45/70, specifically for Trapdoors. 19grns for the lever guns. It's pretty much idiot proof, especially in a smokeless made Pedersoli. You just can't cram enough powder in the case for an overload.
After using BP in my .32/40 Hiwall, and having to clean it afterwards, I tried the TrailBoss and never looked back.
Don't use it with jacketed or gas checked cast bullets, things can get left in the bore. It makes a great subsonic, no recoil load, for other chamberings as well. I've used it with a 125grn cast spitzer in the 7.62x54r and 7.62x69. Makes the SKS a single shot bolt action, and quieter than a .22 HV round.

SR 4759, ACC 5744 give low pressure spike loads, arguably less a spike than BP or Trailboss.; safe in all of my late 1800s blackpowder cartridge long guns.
That said, my shooting champion, smarty pants know it all brother in Michigan loves Trailboss in his old handguns.

9.0 of trailboss with any 165-200 grain bullet makes a fantastic no recoil pleasant to the ears subsonic 308 round!
