Granddad Left Me Some Rifles, Advice on Reg Process

I hope I am in the proper forum, my apologies if not.

As the title suggests, my Grandfather passed some time ago. Cleaning out his home we found a souvenir from the war (a K98k) and a .22 caliber bolt action rifle, the make/model of which escape me, though I am certain it is a pre-depression rifle and suspect it would appear on the Roster of Approved Firearms. I am the only heir with an interest in the firearms.

Forgive my ignorance here, I am relatively new to the firearm world; I did not find any paperwork tied to the weapons. So, I'm at a loss as to how to take legal ownership of the rifles (registration, etc.). I do own guns in California already, have a safe, etc. The matter for me, is how do I get these into my name?

(Possibly) complicating matters, he lived in New York state.

I preemptively appreciate the help of this community. I would hate to see pieces of history get melted down.

I guarantee you wont find these on the roster of approved firearms, because there are no long guns on the roster. The roster does not apply to long guns.

They need to be shipped to a CA FFL, you then need to go to that FFL and process the background check for them, pay the DROS and transfer fees. Wait ten days then pick up. You will also need a current Firearms Safety Card or exemption (like a CCW or current hunting license). The old Handgun Safety Card will not work for long guns.

If these had been formally willed to you in writing, they could have been sent directly to you. Since they were not, they must go through a FFL.

    18 USC 922(a)(3) and 18 USC 922(a)(5)

Thank you all for your rapid responses and advice.

For clarification, would I need to have a NY based FFL ship them to a CA FFL? Or would I simply be able to FedEx them to the CA FFL myself? (after discussing it with the FFL, of course)

You will probably find it more convenient and less expensive to hire a NY FFL to do the shipping.

Be sure you make arrangements with your local destination FFL in CA; also note the NY FFL will have to sign up through the CFLC program - https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/cflcfaqs

I may be interested in the .22 bolt gun. At the very least I can help you ID it.
