I have a Springfield 308 Special that I bought last year. Along with a new barrel, it came with a new production walnut stock and was completely refinished.

It shoots great except for throwing brass right at my face. I pulled the bolt and cut two coils off the ejector spring so we'll see if she behaves any better. This is well documented for 308 guns.

Have one also. No problems throwing brass in my face. Great gun. Fun to shoot.

I actually bought one last week before the CMP notice about them went out. I don't know if I got lucky or what, but I got a seven digit SA with all SA parts that looks totally brand new. Muzzle = 0, Throat = 0, totally flawless CMP stock, literally not a mark on it anywhere. I think the barrel says "CBI 6/15".

I know that a .308 Garand in theory doesn't really have collector value, but I am debating just putting this one in the safe and not shooting it since it is the first Garand that I have ever seen that is literally flawless. I'll probably end up shooting it and refinishing the CMP stock, but not until I've thought about it for awhile. If I could be sure that I'd get the same thing, I'd buy 5 more.

$1030, free shipping. In case you don't already know this, you can't just order from CMP, you have to jump through several hoops.

I bought the 308 to use as my shooter since I knew it would not be as collectable as the service grade.

I bought a .308 Special from the CMP two years ago. It is my one and only Garand that I will own. My favorite rifle by far. I didn't want another caliber , so I opted for the .308. No regrets! It is a 54 HRA receiver that is in excellent shape.

$1030.00 shipped, plus Soviet Province tribute. Say $1100.00.

For a new Criterion Bbl'd .308 M1 Garand, with the reduction in surplus ammo costs and arguably less wear-n-tear, is not bad at all.

Toyed with the Idea, and even considered re-Bbl'ing a CAL. .30 M1.

That said, all my M1 Garands are U.S. RIFLE CAL. .30 M1 SPRINGFIELD ARMORY, the way God and Uncle John intended.

                  (and, bein' ~$600.00/pop didn't hurt)

I don't think they charge sales tax for shipping over here.

I wouldn't hesitate to shoot that till your face is blue. Every cmp refurbished M1 will be reparked, new barrel put on, new stock, if you see a rack of them in front of you, you would think they are identical. They are that pristine! So shoot them, enjoy them!

Put some blo/pto on the stock, you may have to do a little fitting, and plenty of lube and she will be ready for some range time.

A M1 Garand in .308 is ballistic sacrilege. If you start doing that then someone is going to think it's normal to convert a 1911 into 9 millimeter.

Doesn't anyone remember John Wayne and the Sands of Iwo Jima?

                          7.62x51 uses a .30 cal bullet.

                          7.62x63 uses a .30 cal bullet.

If you reload, you can get more loaded rounds of 7.62x51 from an 8lb jug of your powder of choice.

                          You get to shoot more

I ordered one of these in National Match from SA in 1983 and this is my preferred rifle. It will function in any environment and is as accurate as anyone could want. I trained with the M1 back in the mid sixties and it really is the perfect battlefield instrument.

(and I reload a lot for it.)
