It appears he isn't aware that C&R handguns are exempt from the California handgun roster. You really can't blame someone in Reno, NV for not being an expert on all of the details and exceptions in California's ridiculously voluminous, complicated, and labyrinthine gun laws.

Instead of just being indignant, take the opportunity to educate him. Send him this link http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/ and point out the part I bolded:

Effective January 1, 2001, no handgun may be manufactured within California, imported into California for sale, lent, given, kept for sale, or offered/exposed for sale unless that handgun model has passed firing, safety, and drop tests and is certified for sale in California by the Department of Justice. Private party transfers, curio/relic handguns, certain single-action revolvers, and pawn/consignment returns are exempt from this requirement.

I got a 1919 production Colt M1911 at Cabelas. Its serial number is >600000 and M1911's in that serial number range often went to the US Marine Corps. I haven't lettered it yet to find out if it went to the USMC.

Just to bring you up to date, in another thread, I have been having a conversation through email about this. With the help of other calgunners, I explained the issue to these people. But they are allowing themselves to be bullied by California bureaucrats.

If you can't get a seller to ship a California-legal firearm to a California FFL even though the firearm is California-legal, you can use a middleman service. There are out-of-state FFLs - often ex-Californians - who can help you get what you want. The seller ships the California-legal firearm to the middleman FFL who then ships it to your FFL. There is a fee of course but it enables you to get a California-legal firearm that you might not otherwise be able to get.

That's not the issue because cabelas said they would ship a California legal firearm to California. The issue is that C&R firearms are not cash and carry for Californians. Any other middle man just adds more unnecessary cost.

That's not what the letter from the Cabelas guy in Reno said.

Direct from Cabelas:

Thank you for your interest Mr. Browning. Before we proceed further, could I ask you in which state your C&R license is located? Cabela’s has instituted a policy for California C&R holders where we must ship to a dealer in California for them to pick up any firearms. Here at the Gun Library, we can no longer allow California C&R holders to take firearms with them upon purchase. Also any handguns would have to be on the current California DOJ approved list for us to ship them into California.

Haha i'll bet this is part of the reason they don't want to sell to Californians. This place sucks and people still want to argue about it.

For years now there have been numerous complaints of out-of-state sellers not wanting to deal with California. I have never begrudged them that because I live in this place and still don't understand the gun laws. Hell, DOJ can't even clearly define half of it so why would you reasonably expect an FFL to take a risk based on your word or anybody else's?

Rather than impotently whine about it in thread after thread, buy from someone else or move out of California, job done.

It will make a difference to you eventually. Oregon has taken a very left swing into gun grabbing the last two years. There is nothing stopping Cabela's from just saying they will no longer honor 03s at all anywhere for anyone.

There are many complex laws IN California. This has nothing to do with California. It's one of the few areas that is crystal clear. I can cash and carry (provided state law of THAT state allows it) a C&R handgun that I buy. When I come back to CA, I must report the purchase using the correct form.

It isn't hard. There is nothing more to it. Any mention of the roster or shipping to a CA FFL (hellol... I am a FFL...) is just needless anti-gun compliance department anti-gun mumbo jumbo.
