Mosin 91 ID?

Stopped in the Boomtown Cabelas yesterday and checked out the used guns. A young man was looking over a Mosin that I only glanced at earlier after I saw the $299 price tag.
When he took it from the rack, I noticed it was a Hex 91 with an Arshin rear sight. What caught my eye was no hand guard. Took a closer look, and the barrel bands appeared to have been made to form to the stock and barrel, and never having had a hand guard.
Didn't have my old man reading glasses, so I couldn't see the markings. I asked him if he could. Said he could see 1916, a bunch of Russian, and could make out the letters "...ory"?
I can't recall any model not having one, any guesses?

Missing hand guards are common with M91's sadly. People can get $100 for them.

HP, that was the first thing I asked him, "Does it say Remington on it?". Let me know what it is, or maybe not, if I'm going to really regret not buying it.

The link in post 2 shows variations, according to that, handdguards started in Feb 1894.

There is one other picture on that page of a 91 without a handguard, a WW1 German capture, fitted with a Mauser front band and bayonet lug.

You are really going to kick yourself if that is what it is.....
