Backstrap Number

I just got a 1937 Brazilian Contract S&W 1917. Looks like it's in good condition. Still in jail. I noticed that it has a number (not the SN) on the backstrap. Anyone know what that is?

Rack number for inventory purposes in an arms room. U.S. arms receive the same thing, just that ours are usually marked in a temporary fashion on a piece of tape or with white-out on the stock.



My M1937 has also has a number on the backstrap. Seems to have been standard procedure for Brazil

Nice 1917. Mine is a tad less nice than yours, and has checkered grips. I hope it shoots well. The rifling in the barrel looked a little shallow, but the bore seemed fine, no pitting or bulges, etc.
