    Pictures of Last-ditch K98

These are the pictures I promised on a previous posting. The metal has light surface rust and the wood is very dry, but the condition is actually better than the pictures. I should have wiped the dust off it before i took the pics, the dust makes it look worse than it is. It has spent its life in a closet and the last 10 or so years on a mantle over a un used fire place. the AZ weather has been kind to it.

    Here's the link:

Thanks for the photos. Is it a single shot or did they put a follower in the hollowed out stock? Again, thanks for sharing.

that rifle is so crude the Russians would laugh. I do not think this is a German rifle regardless of the stamping, I do know after the war many copies were made the stamping may have been placed to sell the rifle at a higher price.
retreat! we must go comrade we will fight again another day.

Looks an awful lot like a Steyr VK98, and if it's original that's worth a pretty penny. Far too valuable to be a fireplace ornament

          Here's a video on them:

http://jamesdjulia.com/item/1231-386/ By the beginning of 1945, the Nazi government in Germany was looking to find cheaper ways to equip the Volksturm, and solicited bids and designs from several major arms manufacturers. The Steyr company created a crude but effective version of the Mauser 98 which was dubbed the VK-98 or VG-5. Mechanically it is identical

I don't know much of these things, but to me it looks like the real thing. An original Steyr VK98. The serial number is in the correct range and without letter suffix, slab stock with hollowed out magazine well inside the stock is also within this 7000 range. Welded front sight, large contour/unfinished barrel blank, staked rear sight on top of receiver, the wire and washer sling keeper in front of stock, 'V' on bottom of bolt handle base, bolt should also be serial numbered and match the barrel serial. Proofs on barrel and rear of bolt handle.

Nice! I want it, give it to me!

(I don't think the stock check pad thing is original though but I don't know. Never seen picture of that before)

I find it interesting that they took the time to serialize these rifles. Thanks for posting up pics John.

You should see other Volkssturm rifles. Makes this one look nice.

                  VG-1 for example.

The Walther Volksgewehr VG1 was a last-ditch German bolt action rifle designed for very cheap manufacture.

At first i thought it was a single shot but it does have a magazine spring and follower inside the wood. I was told his uncle brought other German guns home that he figured were worth more and later in life sold them. I think he thought this one was so crude nobody would want it. This was before the internet.
I am no Mauser expert but i am pretty sure this rifle is the real deal.I love the front sling [ looks like bent wire].

This rifle makes my 1938 TULA 91 30 look like a Swedish Mauser

It looks original to me. Many people blow them off as crude fakes because there are so few in existence and rarely seen. I don't know the exact value but it is desirable to collectors.

Very very expensive late ditch Volkstrum rifle. Very few in circulation since they are uglier than a Dodo bird, but just as rare. Seen them go for $5000 in original condition. This one is just that.
