St. Louis police to sell Tommy gun stash to buy new firearms

The St. Louis Police Department is selling off a $1.2 million stash of firearms, including 27 Thompson submachine guns, to help fund the purchase of new Beretta pistols and AR-15 rifles for officers, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The Tommy guns are being purchased by a Kentucky-based distributor for $22,000 each and will then be sold off to interested buyers if they pass a series of restrictions. Amongst them: needing to hold a federal license to buy such firearms, passing a background check, paying a $200 federal tax and notifying their neighborhood’s local police chief of the purchase, the St. Louis Post Dispatch reports

Police will begin transferring the weapons pending approval by city officials of a contract with the broker.

I remember back in 1967 my Dad took me to his friends office in the San Francisco FBI and they put a full size flak jacket on me and let me hold one of their Thompsons. I remember thinking how could anyone work with all that weight on them then remembered I was just ten years old at the time.

I know some local PD's around here that still have some in their armories. Would never be able to sell those bad boys in CA though

That is awesome. I would love to be able to own one.

At least some Dems have half a brain. They actually are funding through common sense rather than higher taxes and melting them down just to say FU to firearms owners.

Such a thing would never happen in NJ. When the NJSP switched from Ruger Service Six .357 they melted them all down. Wouldn't even let the Troopers buy their own service revolver.

For the record Ruger Service Six, Security Six, and Speed Six are some of the best revolvers ever made and can usually be picked up for under $500.

I had a M1928 that I sold to fund some other gun purchases. It was a fun thing to shoot and always drew a crowd when I brought it out.

I still have my Colt 1921A # 935, and a original Auto Ordinance 1928. Had them here in Kalifornia until last year when DoJ would not allow me to renew my permit s.

Now they rest in AZ. Where I will be soon .

I got to shoot one of them in Vegas. It was a blast! I found it to be very controllable.
