This could be expanded into a dissertation for anyone seriously invested enough to study the socio-economics of firearm collecting. If volumes of literature exist on consumer behavior in every other type of market, why not something about this particular niche which we are a part of? Could be pretty interesting.

Interesting...I think I started as "accumulator" then moved to Opportunist, then to trader then to Historian and back to accumulator again. To explain, I started gathering anything milsurp...with no particular goal, just what I stumbled across at gun shows that I liked (mind you ,I started into guns in the late 70s)
I then started focusing on WW2 martial arms (both allied & Axis)...Then I found I really liked American arms and set out to own One of every model (not variant) of everything Springfield Armory produced in modern centerfire long guns. I dumped almost all the Axis and allied stuff to fund this goal. When this was accomplished I had many guns and limited safes ,so eventually I thinned the heard of what I no longer shot, but kept what I liked...so now my collection looks more like an animal shelter for papered thourobreds. Its always the thrill of the hunt. Anyways, thanks for posting that OP.

I would describe myself as 1 and 2, however I've tried my hand once with #7.

I am a little bit of each one except trader. I hate selling or trading guns.

I'm a bit of each but, I'll admit, I am currently more of an accumulator.

Probably 70% 3, 20% 4, and 10% 2(a) here. Edit: I guess you could throw some #1 in there too lol

I say 2(a) not because I don't have references or anything like that, just that I'm very patient when I'm looking for something specific. Back when I was looking for a RC K98, when they were more common to find at gun stores, I probably looked through 50 before I found the right one for me.

I was definitely an Accumulator (Not always by choice. "Oh look...another 75+ guns inherited from my Uncle. WTF?!" haha!!) but now I'm a trader/seller.

Nowadays, any/all of my guns are subject to be sold if the mood strikes.

                            Lol, I'm almost everything. 1, 2(a), 3, and 7

1 and 3 run together for me as I'm a general collector, but my collection mostly pertains to WW2 and a little WW1. WW2 European Theater has always been my thing, but as I got more into this, WW1 has interested me more

2(a) was more on the loose end because I had cash to burn, but still had to be mindful since I still had to bay bills and rent. At the same time, I made sure it was a great looking piece that didn't look like it was thrashed. I'd like to think any museum would jump for joy at my collection rather than say, "ho hum, we got those already"

7 is not so much stocking up for future use, but that if I see a sporter for a killer deal where I could fix it up and not be out any money than if I bought something original, then I'll go for it. Example: A cut up M39 I got for free and found a stock for $80, pretty good resto if I do say so myself
