    8x57JS ammo question

Just picked up a Romanian Contract VZ24. I'm a complete newbie with this caliber. I was thinking about picking some of this up:

    Has anybody used this?

I understand there are two common bullet diameters: .318 and .323, and from what I understand the VZ24 is a .323 What I'm confused about is why does the ad state "non-WWII dimensions"?

It will fit, but it is garbage ammo. All 8mm Mausers from the K98 on are JS. Maybe their excuse for why their ammo sucks is the rifles. Not really sure. Stick to the surplus ammo. I prefer the FN Ammo or what people call Canadian CIA Ammo.

If you do not want to shoot corrosive, or want to reload your cases, Prvi ammo is pretty good.

        thanks!

Yeah, I figured I'd get the Prvi if the Romanian stuff was crap. I was hoping I would be surprised as I was with how well the cheap Wolf stuff works in my Jungle Carbine.

I shoot the Prvi through my Garand and M95 and it's been great.

I'd steer clear of that Romanian ammo.

People have been having problems with it for years...

It is slightly oversized, and may not fit in your rifle. Read the reviews.

I know a guy who bought a couple cases to run through his MG34, they wont chamber. Another friend has a MG42 that runs it just fine.

I've ran this stuff through my m24/47 without issue. This might be a different manufacturer though. Anybody who can weigh in?

Its the same manufacturer, but different distributor.

This ammo is the same, but the case neck is slightly higher than on in spec ammo. This causes the ammo to chamber differently on different guns.

I have 2 rifles this works in, both chamber it tightly. One it does not chamber in.

The ammo shot decently from the rifles it worked it. Perfect for plinking other than the tight fit.

I advise trying one box then getting more if it works.

As for the "non wwii dimensions" that's a load of poppycock. The ammo is just out of spec.

Starting around 1904 the german military switched from old round nosed ammo to pointed Spitzer bullets. When they converted their guns they upped the bore size to .323 from .318, any older guns updated will be marked with an 's' on the bore. Guns produced after World war 1 are most certainly in .323 dimension.

How about the Romanian 8mm in spam cans? What's the quality of that surplus compared to the newer commercial ammo?

8mm romanian spam cans are corrosive, but shoot grst! Well made and reliable I have never has a hangfire or dud. Lots first strike every time.

This ammo is S patrone style after Wei ammo, not Ss patrone like wwii. This means that bit will be less accurate in short barreled rifles like a vz24 or kar98k.

I shoot it out of long and short mausers and it prefores well for plinking. Ss patrone however is better.

Don't hesitate to send me the romanian stuff if you don't want it! My gew98 loooves it!

To answer the second question(sorry different reply ;P ) the 8mm romanian surplus feeds reliably in everything and has great primers that seem to be in perfect condition. This ammo is far better than new production romanian stuff in every way.

It is corrosive though. If you don't want to deal with it feel free to send it my way!

Ive shot two spam cans of Romanian with zero problems in an 1888 commision rifle, yes they are low powered for these small actions and had decent accuracy out to 300, dont know if boxed ammo is repact or reject Romanian.

Proceed with caution and try out a few boxes.

It's good to hear that these rounds are safe for an '88. I might just keep my cans around for some desert plinking with her then.

Thanks for all of your replies; and sorry for threadjacking

Make sure your 88 has the 's' stamping for the updated ammunition. Then have at it!
