I finished cleaning and lubing my M1917 and took it to the range Saturday evening. I ran a total of 34 rounds through it. I used M2 ball surplus (some Danish and some Pakistanni - both of which work perfectly in my M1). I loaded six rounds by hand (only have Mauser stripper clips which fit the 30-06 but don't fit the M1917 receiver) but a few times topped off. First two rounds fed no problem but starting at number three it would sometimes jam.
The jam was caused by the third or fourth round (sometimes both) sliding forward in the magazine well, ahead of the remaining rounds, and nosing into the front of the magazine well. It was solved by using a spent cartridge to slide the jammed round to the rear at which point it would then feed correctly. Rounds five and six always fed correctly.
The follower is milled but someone prior to me filed the square edge at the rear into a ramp (common modification over the years I read).
Any thoughts on what could be causing this? It's really the only hiccup in this rifle so far. It really is a nice piece to shoot and I'm in love with it, just want to work out the kinks.
