I'm gonna sound like an idiot but it's never stopped me before.

I see that there is the 8mm Yugo (198gr) and the 8mm Romanian (153gr) and both are corrosive.

I have a Mauser 98K (thanks, Tenpercent). What should I shoot in it?

And what does "corrosive" mean? I seem to remember something about primers and having to clean the barrel immediately, but with what?

Sorry for all the noob questions. I really am a pretty knowledgeable gun owner. I just don't play often with C&Rs.

The most "correct" bullet weight would be 198gr, as that's what he Germans used during most of WWII. But both the Yugo and Romanian will work fine in your K98 Mauser. The Yugo might have a slightly higher point of impact. The Yugo has a reputation of hard or deep-set primers that require a strong firing pin spring to set of reliably.

And yes, "corrosive" ammo is corrosive because of the primers. The residue from the fired primers contains salt. Most modern bore solvents can't remove this salt, so you need to clean with a water based cleaner, such as water, hot water, hot soapy water, etc. Many folks use Windex to clean up after corrosive ammo because it contains water to remove the corrosive salts, ammonia to remove copper fouling, and detergent to remove powder fouling.

You should clean the bore as soon as you can after firing corrosive ammo and then be sure to leave a light coat of modern gun oil to protect the bore when you are done. I run three patches soaked in Windex down the bore while still at the range, then a couple of dry patches, then a patch with CLP gun oil. Then at home I just clean the guns like normal with CLP, bore brush, and patches. No rust yet!
