If you mean the frayed material on the edges of the grip panels, it's probably wood pulp or some kind of textile fiber used in the plastic compound. I've seen this on old table radios and electrical fixtures (which was probably asbestos).
Trying to scrape it away might make it worse and expose more of the fiber. I think it looks fine the way it is.Comment
