    What to do?

I was all set to get RM1SPECIAL and had put my paperwork (they started to process my order on Jan 26th) and then I a received a email from CMP:

    "Mr. ________,

The Special grade rifle you requested is currently on backorder. At this time, we do not know when they will be filled. Would you be interested in changing your order to item RM1FIELDSPECIAL for $830. The difference in the Special and Field Special is the Field grade Receiver will have considerable pitting above the wood line. Please let me know if you would like to keep the item on backorder or if you would like to change the order."

So what to do - wait for a RM1SPECIAL or get a RM1FIELDSPECIAL?

Take what they offer and get another when you can.

Take the offer. You can always sell it if you don't care for it.

What is the price on the original ordered one?

It almost sounds like, and this is based on not knowing the original pricing, I would wait for a non pitted receiver I think.

If it was me, I would say go ahead and take the offer with the intention of down the road getting what you originally wanted.

          If you have patience, wait.

The one I originally wanted cost: $1030.

I would wait for the nicer looking version if this is going to be your only Garand. The field versions can look ok but I think you'll be more satisfied if you wait for the service grade.
