M1 Garand worth it?

I'm really wanting to get an M1 Garand special from cmp. But after hearing the surplus ammo is dwindling, other comparable in price ammo is out of stock everywhere, and the only ammo I can find is $1+ per round. It's making me second guess getting one. Is it in a dry spell, or should I be looking for a different rifle to shoot?

Its absolutely worth it and the PPU 30-06 ammo has been running around .70/round. Don't wait too long or the CMP may be out of them.

Absolutely, one hundred percent, without a doubt, totally worth it. Please, please, please get a Garand because these rifles need to be in the hands of Americans. It is a spectacular rifle and you will not regret buying one. In fact, you will probably laugh at yourself for wondering why you were questioning the decision.

My first time shooting a Garand was a religious experience. I am sure it will be for you. If it is not then I'll buy it from you.

Yes. No other rifle I own brings the same smile as the Garand. PPU ammo is .67c/rd last time I bought, Garand safe. Buy one and don't look back!

Once you shoot one you'll understand what everyone is talking about.
There was a period of time (about 7 years) when IF I got to go shooting I took other things not a Garand. Then one day I went shooting with some co-workers
and decided to take one of my Garands. After 2 hours they went home, I remained at the range another two hours continuing to shoot the Garand, saying to myself WHY did I wait to so long to shoot my Garands! Kinda of an Epiphany!

As you can tell from the responses, you MUST grab one while you still can. It's the rifle that saved the world, the greatest battle implement ever fielded according to Patton. I have a CMP Service Special and it is by far my favorite gun I own and I own a decent amount of guns. You need to learn to reload also. Just do it, California is essentially going to disarm people by making ammo so hard to acquire that a lot of people will wimp out and disarm themselves. Reloading will be the same eventually but in the meantime, you can build up a stash of components that will keep you shooting to years, decades if you want.

No other rifle lives up to the name of "Boomstick" like a Garand. I could be mistaken but I think the Garand was the original Boomstick.
