Please help me identify this rifle.

My work buddy's son in law bought him this rifle for Christmas. He he asked me to help him identify it but my expertise is in mor modern rifles. His son in law said it was Australian, worth $1k+ but he got it $275. I have my doubts about the origin. Thanks in advance.

Not an expert in MIL surp but it looks like a shortened version of a Mosin Nagant. M44 carbine maybe?

Mosin Nagant 7.62x54R. They are dime a dozen. I paid $50 bucks for one on sale at big5 in 2002.

Its a Russian design but they were also made by manufacturers outside of Russia.

OP look up M38 or M59 carbine. They look a lot like your pics.

Look on the top of the barrel near the receiver and match below.

            Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

Looks like a M44 Mosin - worth $200 - $350 maybe, depending on condition and make, import marks or lack thereof, etc. Probably Russky but could be something else. I bought a real nice one this year for around $250.

And lolz on 'Australian' Perhaps he meant 'Austrian', which it also doubtfully is.

probably m44 from the look of the bayonet, some can be valuable depending on the specifics and condition, otherwise 275 is pretty much what run of the mill examples go for, so no matter what he didnt get ripped off

Yep. M44. Can you show a few close up shots of the top of the receiver? The stampings there generally tell the story.

Dime a dozen? Maybe 15 years ago they were. They are steadily rising in price, going as high as $220 currently.

Yeah and it's exactly what I mean. Comparing to a $1000 dollars stated value by seller, they are even now are dime a dozen. Mere few hundred bucks. Made in russland.

Even if it's not a Russian it's no where near $1000. Here's a good video about some of the rarer ones.

The stock & the blueing look good. Could it be a Polish M44?
