I really admire the old time craftsmanship & machining on these old Mausers

it's almost like a Swiss Watch with all the parts hand fitted the old fashioned way

There certainly ARE legally owned C+R M712 machine-guns in California, and dealer samples created from parts kits -
Is there a likely-hood that the average shooter or collector on Calguns could acquire the state and federal permits required to own or manufacture one, about 10,000 to 1 on a good day.

But, there are high end collectors, dealers, manufacturers and movie suppliers who do have the correct permits, acquired through large legal investment, political contacts (law letters) and time.

The propagation of false information on NFA weapons in CA also makes it next to impossible to discuss this stuff anywhere.

I found a stunning Red 9 on Gunbroker that has been relisted several times with no bids. Opening bid only $1K, which I'd pay in a heartbeat.

Seller refuses to send it to CA. And I have asked him twice. The CFLC spooks a lot of out of state dealers, which I presume is exactly why it exists.

A young Winston Churchill also used one.

In the year 1898 Winston Churchill, future Prime Minister of England, was a young lieutenant in the British Army. With funds provided by his mother, he had just purchased a strange-looking new pistol from the firm of Westley Richards & Co. in Birmingham, England. Attached to the 21st Lancers in Sudan, Churchill effectively used that pistol to save his life. In the battle of Omdurman, which was one of the very last British cavalry charges, on September 2, 1898 Churchill killed or wounded at least three of his fierce spear-toting dervish opponents. The pistol he used was a Mauser C96 “Broomhandle.” Writing his mother, Churchill called the pistol “…the best thing in the world.” He later carried the same handgun as a war correspondent in the second Boer War. Today, the Mauser has one of the most recognizable profiles of any firearm ever made. It is a hot and very classic collector item.

Loved the looks of it but it seemed something broke just about every trip out.

I haven't shot my broomhandle myself. But about 6 months after I bought it I took three women who had little or no experience shooting to my gun club and I let them shoot it, along with several of my other old guns (after starting them out with .22's).



The broomhandle worked fine but after she shot it I examined the fired cases and several had pierced primers. The firing pin has a somewhat sharp tip. I replaced the firing pin spring that cushions the firing pin forward motion (and kept the original) but I haven't fired it since.

The one we used on Savage Dog, which will be out next year, was interesting, the ejector was missing, but the spent cases still bounced out, under the pressure of the upward magazine spring, no jams with Swanson blanks, fascinating situation, defied reason, but worked fine.

I used an M712 in Young Indiana Jones episode 17 - Austria/Hungary, back in 1991, shot in Prague - the guns were from the Czech army arsenal at Barandov Studios - I have photographs, pre-digital of course.

It is a pretty good film- very bleak though.

Don't own a C-96, the one I handled surprised me, it was pretty well balanced- I always thought it would be clumsy.

always loved the broom handle mausers .when i was around 17 years old had a choice between a p08 and a mauser c96 picked the p08 instead for $55 at a gun shop in Atlanta, made up for my mistake years later . 9mm is the way to go if you can

Those 20 round magazines, are you taking them out of California before this July or would you actually altered them to 10 rounds?

I am still pissed that there is no exception for historical over 10 round magazines.
