    Mosin 91/30, with a scope

    Hey Calgunners,

It took me 2 months to get the parts necessary to assembled this rifle. I didn't have enough money to buy one of the replica PU snipers out there, but I wanted a Mosin with a good bore and an optic to see how accurate these rifles are. Big 5 rifle bought for 79.99 back in the days. The handguard is warped a little so I taped it. Scope mount from Centerfire Systems for 29.99. Bent bolt for 40.00. Cheekpiece from Blackhawk for 20.00. NC Star pistol scope for 50.00. I tried mounting a regular scope, but the eye relief was too far. All no gunsmithing so I can turn the rifle back to the original configuration.

    Whatcha think?

Nice. I just got an ncstar 2-7x with long eye relief for my m44 but haven't scoped it in yet. I am expecting pretty good stuff from it though.

Hope you have better luck with NCstar than I did, my AR killed it, I can just imagine what an M44 would do.

Not long ago, Russian SKS's were $79 and M1 Carbines $100.

Looks like a good job. How does it shoot?

Here is one I did(and other members of the family). $80 MN 91/30 from J&G, $5 scope mount from a gun show parts bin, $10 scope rings, $30 BSA scope, $15 bolt body with some welding and grinding for a bent down bolt. Do it your self MN sniper = Priceless.

I don't know what arsenal. There is no Star or Triangle on it. It is an ex sniper, 1943.

Springfield45, what type of mount did you use on yours? I was looking around and thinking about tapping the receiver, but found this mount.

I've got several of those NCStar pistol scopes on everything from M91/30s, M44, K98, and other battle rifles. While they aren't the clearest of scopes, I haven't had a problem with any one of them. For the price, they are the best way to get optics on an old battle rifle.

Any idea what mount you have there? One of the biggest problems with mounting an optic from the rear sight housing is that most mounts come loose with all the recoil. And since you are using a long weaver mount and extending the scope out over the action; and doing a regular eye relief scope setup instead of the long eye relief scope setup traditionally done from the rear sight housing, you might find out after one or two outings that the mount came loose..and or your scope is not holding zero (ncstars on that kind of rifle is not normally safe).

I'm mentioning this because i went through 2 cheap mounts (<$50) and found out the hard way there was no subtitute for the good ones (S&K Instamounts or Darrell's). But who knows...maybe yours will stay put! Do let us know. i'm also interested in finding out how well yours works out "ergonomically" with that scope extended out over the receiver instead of at the rear sight housing.

                    ..waiting for a range report!

Take a picture of the receiver for me. It sounds pretty interesting.

Did the same thing chef, I even added some extra inserts on the front and back of the instamount. The NC star optics aren't that great. I've had to fix them 1-2 times. The next scope will be of better quality.
The next version will be a PU version so that I can retain the iron sights.
                        good luck

I mounted a Burris Scout scope with S&K mount with good result. Wish I had more magnification tho. However, it is a huge improvement over iron sight.

Because it's a rifle that has survived many miserable years of WWII and laid down a bunch of nazis. Not because its an $80 gun.

If you got this rifle at Big5 it should have either a Star or a triangle on the barrel shank. Maybe it just got worn out over the years. Can you please take some pictures of the barrel shank? Thanks.

P.S. how does she shoot with the set up?
