    Garand barrel no markings ?

got a nice 1944 [ sept ] springfield M1 that has been in storage for many years. Took it apart for inspection and cleaning. All the marked parts are SA but the barrel has no stampings of any kind ?. The metal finish looks new, not a single ding or scratch. My question is why are their no markings on the barrel. The rifle has no import stamp, it might have a Boyds replacement stock highly polished no markings or sanding marks on the wood either. It also has the early machined trigger guard.
    THANKS

Probably commercial barrel. Citadel made barrels for the Arlington Armory Garands and Fed Ord back in the 1990's I believe. As I remember they looked pretty close to GI barrels.

Did you check under the rear handguard? I think that is where Buffalo Arms stamped their barrels and the only to see it is to remove the handguard.

Yes i very carefully inspected the barrel , it looks like a high quality barrel.
citadel & 1990s seem like a good explanation. I bought the rifle from somebody i know and he said it was given to him a few year back after the owner passed.so no traceable history.

I had a Winchester barrel where the stampings were on top of the barrel only to be seen when handguard was removed.

              Understood , just checking.
Good to know if it's a Winchester or commercial barrel if figuring a value.

Citadel barrels were unmarked. Unfortunately they were "hit or miss" in the accuracy at that time (maybe that's why they didn't proudly label their product).

                  # of grooves and twist rate? GI barrels are 4 groove with a 10" twist.

The Citadel barrel I took off had 4 grooves. I never checked twist.

No telling who made a M1 barrel without markings. Douglas provided both 4 and 6 grooves with 10, 11, and 12 twist rates. Sometimes they were not marked depending how they were sold. Numrich and Sarco have had barrels of various makes, configs, and quality over the years. Undoubtedly there are many other makes as well. Bottom line is how do it shoot! If it, and the rifle, hold a TRUE 1-1/2 MOA (or better), then it is a keeper no matter whom made it.

Sounds like you have a nice Garand with commercial stock and barrel. Maybe it's a Citadel, maybe it's another top brand like Douglas/Krieger. Arlington Armory was a re-importer of Garands and M1 Carbines, a descendant of Blue Sky imports. The one I picked up in the late 1990's was just "OK". Citadel barrel was inaccurate and I replaced it with a Criterion 5-6 years ago. It's now my regualr shooter at our CMP matches with Santa Margarita Gun Club at Camp Pendleton:

Congrats on your Garand John. Looking forward to seeing it at one of the monthly shoots.
