    OWS 577/.450 ammunition

A range fried bought a MH Mk IV and some OWS 577/450 ammo made from CBC 24 ga brass shotgun cases. He brought it to the range today, I had my identical Mk IV and converted CBC 24 ga cases that I had done for me and reloaded.

His first shot of the OWS ammo resulted in a pierced primer and lots of gas around his hand and in his face. We looked at the fired case and it is berdan primed with a shotgun type primer. My cases are boxer primed and fit a large pistol primer.

Needless to say he's disappointed with the OWS ammo as he wanted to shoot it off and use the cases for reloading. I gave him one of my reloads to try and it worked fine, no pierced primer.

I don't recommend Old West Scrounger 577/450 ammunition. Best to either get 24 ga cases converted by one of the services on Gunboards or buy some Jamison or Bertram brass and get into reloading. The initial investment is high but the satisfaction level is even higher.

I finished up my range trip by potting at steel plates from 100 to 400 yards from the standing position. The barrel heated very quickly after only 5 rounds rapid. I can see why the defenders of Roark's drift needed to wrap rags around the forearm on their MkIIs to keep from badly burning their fingers during the battle.

That's terrible that Old West Scrounger ammo sucks. There aren't many ammo options for the MH rifles.
