    Identify this Rolling Block

So I've had this Rolling Block sitting in my safe for a while and now it's time to move it. Did some research a while back and I'm pretty sure it's a Remington Sporter No. 1 with bone front sight and single set trigger in 46 CTGE. Other than that and some wide ranging values, that's all I know. Gonna try one last time to get some more info before I just take what I can get within that range. Anyone able to help me out?

Early No. 1 Sporter with straight bar extractor, in .46 cal. rimfire. Ammo might be a little scarce, especially at about $20 a round.

Thanks, Trap. Any ballpark on what those go for? I think last I remember it was $500 or something like that. Going to try and trade it for something more my style.

Tough call, you don't see many in the .46 rimfire cartridges, most got reworked into something else. The .46rf Short was pretty much a pistol cartridge, the .46rf Long and Extra Long were Remington and Ballard rifle chamberings. It was a popular cartridge though, it wasn't discontinued until WWI.
Is that forearm cap nickled steel or German silver?
My best WAG would be in the $600-700 range.

Find a Remington-specific collector's association or website and ask your question about value there. This is an uncommon and valuable rifle, NOT one that should be used for an action for a custom rifle, re-barreled or relined.

All that said, I have no idea of value, not being an antique Remington guy (just an antique....). Another group that might very well have a sense of the value is the American Single Shot Rifle Assn. ("ASSRA"). An email to them might get you a clue.

I'm not sure that .46 RF was really a popular cartridge even back in the 19th Century since so few rifles in this caliber show up now. It may well be that many of them were torn apart for the actions and barreled in something more current. Of course that required replacing the breechblock, but there were plenty of military centerfire blocks available for a long time. Back in the day ammo mfrs. were as much concerned with customer needs and loyalty as the "bottom line" and kept obsolete rounds around LONG after any firearms were made in that caliber. NOT AT ALL LIKE TODAY.

Don't tear yours up; find a collector that wants it more than you do!

Very neat and elegant old Remington!

Thanks for the info. I ran this by a number of other forums including the Remington site and I got a lot of the "Yeah, it's kinda rare, but I can't tell you what it's worth". Got values ranging from $350 to $1500 so I finally threw it up on Gunbroker and it seems to be doing pretty well. So far it's up to $505 in less than 24 hours.

This is one of the few "rare" riles I don't mind parting with.

Not much idea on value. But I love Remington rolling blocks. I would keep it.

Personally I think it's priceless and should go back in the safe. But that's just me.

We already have the only reasonable Gun Control we need, It's called the Second Amendment and it's the government it controls.

I agree. That is a beautiful rifle. Unless I was hard up for money, that would never leave my home. My dad sold an 1892 Rem that was bought by his gramps aftera biz partner plundered all money from the biz. He is not a gun guy like me, but he still regrets that sell 48 years later.
