Overpriced 91/30s at Wild Bill's in Elk Grove

I was with Calgunner Pint at Wild Bill's today (I have a policy not to go there but I didn't have an alternative in this case) and saw that they have around twelve 91/30s in a rack out on the floor where you can touch them. The prices are $300 for round receiver and $400 for hex. They had a mix of both makers, and most of them were all matching and in unusually good shape. (Comes with bayonet and cleaning gear too.) They were still too expensive, but if it's important to you to see and touch what you are buying, it isn't crazy to pay $100 more for that.

They also had a refurbished Russian SKS for $800 on the wall FYI.

Too expensive? To experienced collectors maybe. In the grand scheme of things, not really. If some heretofore unknown milsurp arrived on the market and was $300 with matching numbers with accessories people would buy them in droves. Especially with surplus ammo still available at reasonable cost.

There was a familiar cry of overprice when the market flooded with SKS rifles since a lot of folks bought them for $99 each BITD. That did not stop people in 2013-14 to buy them like crazy and now they are mostly all gone.

My knee jerk reaction would be the same as the OP. But is a durable bolt action rifle with great milsurp lineage worth $300 in 2016? I say yes. The market will be the ultimate decider though.

Yeah I don't ever go to Wild Bill's anymore, and I only live a mile away.
The prices are laughable and the customer service is spotty at best.
The prices went way up after Sandy Hook, and never came back down like everybody else did.
There must be a lot of suckers shopping there if they are still selling guns.

It was the longest wait for paperwork that I have ever experienced and it was 95 degrees in there. They gave us mild attitude and told us we were last in priority.

I can confirm that everything I saw was at the higher-end of the retail markup. It's too bad that they are one of the only places around here that you can buy C&R and Black Powder stuff. (They even had a replica Lemat for $1,200.)

It was disappointingly crowded in there.

I have no reply because you are right.

it all depends on the store, I have been to a few smaller gun stores down in oc to get terrible racy attitudes refusing to sell me anything usually these stores tend to over price their stock. While others greet me with open and prices are fair guess who got the sale?. right now with the situation in cali people are scrambling to get any firearm the election isn't making it easier. after 2017 I am sure we are going to get ca compliant ars, some saigas, and a large stock of mill surplus and chinese sks's.
retreat! we must go comrade we will fight again another day.

                Oc16,
Sounds like you've been to Adee's, Sam Foulups and Turner's. As for Turner's - - I still can't figure out why any one would go to a fishing store for gun stuff.

J+G Gunsmithing in Granite Bay is a good place to go. They usually have several C+Rs with prices ranging from good to a little high. I like them because they'll still do dros's on guns I get from Gun Brokers.
                  Because milsurp.

Could you describe what they did or said to make you feel their attitude was racy?

IMHO, River City Gun Exchange has the best C&R selection in the Sacramento area. Last time I was in there, they had several 91/30s. Their prices are usually decent and customer service is top notch.....if you wait long, it is because they are busy, not because the employees are lazy jackwads.

This. RCGE has the best prices if you're looking to buy C&Rs at brick and mortar stores. Shootin' Shack would be number two. J&G is hit or miss as the rifles they've had on the rack have been sitting there forever due to pricing, but you can get lucky on their consignment handguns and bargain rack rifles. Picked up a Finn-marked 1895 Nagant there for $250.

Complaining about Wild Bills is nothing new. Happens at least once a month in the Sac forum. I only ever go if someone insists on doing a PPT there.

If a trip to Phoenix is in your near future, Bear Arms in Scottsdale had a couple of crates of 91/30s last week and a dozen or so other C&R long guns, including a couple M91s, an Enfield, and a RC K98 with eagles (499.00). Hex 299.00 & round 249.00 Still in cosmoline with accessories. Cal C&R friendly. Bought a 1917 Finned M91 for 431.00 otd. Took 10 minutes book to book, no 4473. Ahh, free states!

I also avoid that place like the plague. They left a very bad taste in my mouth the couple times I went years ago. I noticed my experiences were not unique by what other members posted on here. If they can't bother with decent manners and customer service I don't need to do them any favors by spending money there, when there are so many other better shops in the area to support.
