    BM59 kit and C&R

I saw an ad for a BM-59 parts kit on Centerfire systems website and wondered if some of the more knowledgable C&R members here can offer advice. If I were to take a CMP M1 and have a .308 barrel installed and build a BM-59 using this kit, would it lose C&R status? I recall the Italians had modified the M-1s the US government gave to them in the 1960's but I'm not sure of the precise time period.

Also, besides a receiver and a .308 chambered barrel, what other parts would be needed to make a semiauto BM-59 with this kit? No, I'm not in CA now, so the Roos-Roberti list doesn't affect me any more.

My BM-59 resides in a somewhat freer state. Not sure if they ever had C&R status. Can't help you there. I think Shuff does these conversions.

      AFAIK...

Yes, it will no longer be considered a C&R.

      Per BATFE...
The classification of surplus military firearms as C&R only applies to those firearms in their original military configuration.

I believe a clone would not fall under C&R since it's not original

Anytime a C&R firearm is mechanically modified from it's original condition it no longer qualifies as a C&R. A cosmetic restoration is acceptable...

A lengthy discussion on the FAL files on building faux BM59s with the available kits from Sarco and others.

We're having a semiauto only one built on a converted Garand receiver. Apparently the Italians did this when building some of them originally. Sadly the magazine and flashhider are not legal in the PRC, so we probably never shoot it here. There's a guy named Tim that does the conversions. I can get you info if you want it.

I became irritated at that company and don't patronize them anymore. They would sell me a Mosin 91/30 but refused to send any SKS (back in the glory days of abundant C&R Sino-Albies) to California.

IMO Shuffs is the only one to go to for a BM59build

Thanks everyone for the input. That's a nice BM59. I have a lot of reading to do before I plunge into this.
