M1Garand trigger group drops out

I have a brand new M1 and fired it for the first time this weekend. By new I mean the stock is new and freshly stained, and all metal parts appear to be new and freshly parkerized. The Springfield barrel was made in 2008.

The problem is that the trigger group drops out after 1 or 2 clips are fired. During firing I periodically have to press the trigger guard back into place to prevent it from occurring. There is a fair amount of resistance when doing so (say the last 3/4" of travel), so the lugs appear to be working but it doesn't stay in place.

Any thoughts on what could be causing this? Does the tab on the end of the trigger guard drop neatly into the slot in the trigger housing when the guard is swung into place, or does the guard have to be stretched like a spring to make the tab fit? (Hope that made sense)

Sounds to me like the trigger guard has been stretched.Ever so slightly bend it inward.
I had to do this to one of mine recently.

Makes sense and it should not align with slot. Bend trigger bow to get that tab back in.

You may need to shim that trigger group so it locks up tighter .The tighter the better .

Sounds like there is no need for shims since he's got 3/4" for tension. Bend the trigger guard no more than 1/8". There is probably some diagram with measurements on the CMP Forum.

Make sure the tab on the guard isn't bottoming out in the stock. If it is, you'll need to remove a SMALL amount of wood so it won't bottom out.

I confirmed that at the range and even carved out a tiny bit with a knife just to make sure. That wasn't the problem but it certainly sounds like bending the trigger guard will solve things. If anyone has a link to a diagram that shows exactly how far that tab should be from the slot before it's stretched, I'd appreciate it. Otherwise I'll do it by feel, a little at a time.

I will say this about it, on one of my CMP special garands I had to hit it with a mallet to close it the first few times, it should not be loose at all. My other one didn't need a mallet, but I would never call it easy to close.

Sounds like poor or incorrect fitment between trigger group and stock.
