    Gunbroker, Gunboards.

The really special ones are the Boer rifles with the trench art carved on the butt. Some are real works of art.

There are Lowe made rifles that were contract overruns for the Orange Free State, marked OVS and never delivered to the Boer government. They are fairly easy to find. The next best thing to one that was there.

Boer war capture rifles and carbines are to be found in the UK, the problem is getting them from there to here.

Found a DWM made one that never made it to Africa. Should I pick that one up or wait for one that got there?

Unless your funds are limited I'd say grab that one if condition is good and trade up if you find an actual Boer war issue.

Apparently some had bent handles as well as the usual straight bolt handles. Some had square bottom bolts like the Spanish 93 and some had round bolts.

Yes those are the blockade guns, some of which where re-sold to Chile after the Brits turned them back. If your not totally into actual weapons that went to the conflict (which I think is very very valuable given this was essentially the first global war) then a good 1895 in excellent condition is pretty easy to come by. There are also a few 1893 DVM made Chileans that are more rare.

                    The serial number breakdown:

                    OVS 1-400 Lowe
                    OVS 401-1900 Lowe
                    OVS 1901-2900 DWM
                    OVS 2901-7900 DWM
OVS 7901-8900 DWM (Blockade guns resold to Chile)

The example you show looks very nice, a good solid example of the 1893 Chilean blockade rifle, does the serial fall in 7901-8900? Stock looks original but better pics might help. I'd say $500-800 easy in good shape.

Here are some of my 1895's, you can find some pristine examples once in awhile.

Thats actually a ZAR rifle (Zuid-Africaanische Republiek). They where part of another contract, for some reason I read the it to mean an OVS blockade rifle. They fall into the serials C1-C4000 DVM. Purchased in June and September of 1899, captured in late 1899 in Mozambique.

Stock looks good, maybe lightly sanded but very lightly. The ME and MF mark is still an open mystery, I started a thread on it earlier this year and the consensus was that it was related to a Chilean arsenal refub stamp, but I am still unconvinced.

The purpose of this thread is to talk about the “MF” (some claim it is an M.E.) marked Chilean stock cartouche, and hopefully has some new info. If you search for this one on google you will get many results with people asking the same questions, usually with vague answers or none at all...
