Best way to remove cosmoline

I recently purchased a Yugo M24A and it is caked in cosmoline. This is my first experience with this type of cleaning, and I am seeking opinions and advice.

Some research shows baking it off in the sun, using a heat gun, use ballistol, etc. Maybe a combination of all and more?

Mineral spirits. soak everything but the wood in mineral spirits. nylon brush comes right off.
put the wood in the sun to bake out the cosmo. wipe down with a paper towels every couple hours. you can put it in a hot car inside a black hefty bag also works.

The best and most effective way to remove cosmoline is rinsing it off with hot water. Chemically, cosmoline is a homogeneous mixture of oily and waxy long-chain, non-polar hydrocarbons. It is always brown in color, but can differ in viscosity and shear strength. Cosmoline

Put the bayo on and stick it in your lawn. Let that hellish sun do the work for you.

Heat always helps no matter what you use but I've never found anything that works better than Slip 2000 Cleaner degreaser. I buy it by the gallon. Water soluble and pretty much odorless too.

Stick it in a black trashbag lined with newspaper in the sun for a few days then wipe it clean. The stock will sweat Cosmo when you shoot it for awhile.

I did my SKS and M44 by putting the parts in a Hefty bag and leaving them out in the hot sun. Just happen to have perfect days for it. You take the parts out every few hours and wipe the cosmo off with a rag. Repeat.

Do it over a couple of days and you're golden.

Wow thanks for all of the great tips everyone. Seems like, bottom like - heat and a little patience will do it. I am a big believer in hot water pressure, and I think I may try good ol ca sun on the stock. I did not even think of the stock potentially sweating later - again, thank you for all of the tips. I pick it up next week so I will try to post before/after pics.

Turn up the hot water heater to its max, and run it through the dishwasher.

A divorce may ensue, but at least your gun will be free of cosmoline.

I once did a stock in the oven. It works but what a smoky mess and cleanup was bad.

I've used white gas on the metal to remove cosmo with good results. As others have mentioned, leaving it out in the sun will help immeasurably in softening it.
