Help! Trouble removing op rod spring from M1 Garand

I'm trying to swap out my op rod spring, which slides right out. However, I'm having trouble getting the spring off the follower arm, I think it's called. it's the part that clips on to the follower.

Any tips on how to wiggle this thing off without damaging the spring? Already tried some WD-40 to no avail.

Don't try to just pull it off, try to unscrew it, basically. One way will tighten it and the other will try to loosen it. Sorry I don't remember which way to turn it but you'll figure it out.

You see that thing that the spring is attached to? Push that long thing (follower rod) forward away from the follower arm. But, I would highly suggest to get the book by Scott Duff "The M1 Garand owners guide".

As Jon indicated, twist the spring in the same direction that it is coiled. This will cause the spring to want to open up. Do that while pulling on it.

You can use the same trick to install a new spring that is tight.

Thanks guys. Was able to get the spring replaced with that advice.

I'll definitely have to look into that book.
