    GARAND...BUY IT?

    Hi All,

Came across a field grade M1 for $675. Don't know diddly about them but that's the cheapest I've seen. What and where to look for what? Thanks, PAX

What can you tell us about it? $40 more than the CMP charges so if it's a nice example I would jump on it.

$40 more than they sold them for before closing off orders. Price might go up when they start accepting orders again.

I'd say if it has cmp documentation with good barrel readings, and isn't completely beat to crap to go for it if you are in the market. Garands priced that low do not last long on the market as I'm sure everyone knows.

I'd buy one at that price, as long a it didn't look like it was thrown down a driveway too many times.

It's not particularly nice, but not beat. Has a green tint to the park, hg is darker. What marks should I be looking for. It's in a shop down the street on consignment. PAX

I'd check it for import marks I guess. Is it at Barnwood?

What manufacturer is it? There are only 4 USGI manufacturers. Springfield, Winchester, Harrington Richardson, and International Harvester. There was also commercially made Springfields, but their serial number is 7,000,000+. Any of these are good to go. As are the Italian Berreta and Breda made ones.
Before you buy, look carefully at the middle of the receiver for obvious welding marks, or machining marks that don't match the rest of the marks.
Many Garand rifles were"restored" by welding together 2 cut half's. You really don't want one of those. Though I have one.
Stay away from the Century made ones.

Unless it's a restored drill rifle I would go for it!

Unless it is obviously a reweld or barrel looks like a garden stake, go for it. Garands go for 1k easily in this part of the country.

You can't learn enough in that short of a time period. It takes years and years of research and study to make an educated guess. Go with your gut feeling or see if there is someone close to you who will accompany you to look at it.

I should have said take someone knowledgeable on the subject with you. I'd go with you but we're several hours apart.
