My one and only CMP sg purchase (but it's not my only M1 rifle) of an HRA 5 years ago was a disappointment at best. The metal was almost brand new and a mw of less than 1 but it came with that crappy, unfit to be on any one's rifle pumpkin wood. I got it properly clothed in very short order but it cost me another $250. So much for the '' cheap'' CMP rifles.

No sense in throwing just any SA stock on. If not going for a correct SA/NFR cartouched stock you may as well get any sanded USGI stock.
You really dont know how lucky you are to get a WWII receiver with correct barrel. Its better than getting beat up USGI stock and a replaced barrel anyday

Well that does make me feel better. This is my first Garand and I don't even know what I don't know yet. I am definitely planning on getting something unsanded with intact cartouche. Hopefully matching hand guards as well as most of what I've seen so far are stocks only with no hand guards

What I am trying to tell you there is absolutly no sense in throwing on just any SA Cartouched stock. If you dont put on the correct stock why spend extra money for a cartouched stock?
This is just my opinion, its a nice rifle but a mixmaster and I dont see the reason to spend $350 or so on a SA/NFR stock set. If you dont like the commercial stock buy a sanded USGI stock with handguards . A real nice set with no cartouche can still run you a up to couple hundred $$$

I'm not saying your complaining - but for the rifle you posted, you got a stupid good deal. You can sell it all day for $900 as it sits if you don't like it, more if you're willing to wait for a week or two.

That's a $1,000+ rifle the CMP just sold you for $675 (or whatever they're getting now).

Thank you all for talking me off the ledge, I formally redact my disappointment remarks

I'll still be ordering a field grade as soon as they open up again

I get that you are disappointed because you didn't get a GI stock set. I really do. We'd all prefer to get out CMP Garands with GI stocks. But that is easily rectified, and putting aside the wood for the moment the rifle you got is a very nice one at a bargain price.

I don't know where the CMP sources the commercial stocks from, but I presume it is Boyd's. If it is Boyd's, those Boyd's stock sets are very nice. I had a 1943 SA Garand in a Boyd's stock, and I preferred that stock for shooting over the GI ones.

Take it out and shoot the hell out of it. I guarantee you the disappointment will disappear.

I'm getting a Field Grade delivered tomorrow. I'll post pictures to give you an idea what a FG looks like.

Yeah in hindsight when I placed the order I fully expected a CMP stock as that was the norm at the time. I simply got my hopes up due to the fact that recently, several people here and over on CMP forums have been posting SG with USGI wood and I had specifically put a note requesting USGI. That is all. I'll never sell this one and will just get more when the opportunity arises.

I didn't put a "stickie" on my order and got USGI wood. I've been told stickies are ignored and you get what you get but I guess it doesn't hurt to ask. At least with a FG you are pretty much guaranteed USGI wood.

While Field Grades will come with military wood many of them are mixmatched firewood. The good ole days are over

dang Orlando ... is there anywhere I don't see you?
                              You must really get around.
What are you doing hanging out on a cali site?
I don't like new wood much myself but it is what it is.

That's pretty nice, does not appear to be rebarreled.
