So glennsche, you sold your guns...

... what have you been doing?

As some of you may recall, I mentioned a month or two ago that i was selling all (well..most) of my guns and "getting out" of the hobby.

So, liquidating the rifle collection produced some cash, and this is what i've turned it into: helmets, helmets, helmets!

I've sold 10 guns or so in the past while and really turned the helmet collection into something nice. What was primarily milsurps with a few nice pieces has gradually metamorphosed into a collection worthy of the name; sort of like what started with a bunch of big5 mausers and mosins has gradually picked up a few nice garands and an svt...

    anyway to the pics!

A Swiss Artilleryman's Shako, model 1898. These were worn from '98-1916 when they replaced with steel helmets. Whats neat about this guy is its artillery from canton Glarus, which is a very rural place; ie, the population today is only 12k people, makes you wonder how many they could muster for artillery 100yrs ago. So this is neat as its pretty rare.

next up: 2 french Adrian helmet variants, the armored troops model, 1935, and the airforce model, 1950 (in blue). Love these. They were both hard to find, and especially with the leather pad in decent shape. The leather pad is sort of like a bike helmet; the original m1915 adrian was no good for troops who had to peer thru visors or range finders like a tanker would, so they removed the front visor and replaced it with a pad. The badge differed depending on service branch; tankers wore the one above, the guys who drove armored cars had a different badge, etc. Am very please with both of these, as they're both in great shape!

next up... the main event... THE IMPERIAL COLLECTION

3 of the 4 of these ive gotten recently, the Baden Infantry, the Prussian Arty and the Prussian Uhlan Tschapka.

Here's the tschapka in more detail:

so guys, if you ever get tired of guns, move to where the ranges all suck, or just get fed up with wondering if the DOJ is gonna come knockin', i can recommend... if you sell your guns, there are lots of historical things to get into which are just as cool! (if of slightly less utility in the event of violent revolution or zombie apocalypse)

    greets,

Awesome collection! I kinda went the reverse order you did started with collecting third Reich military stuff then caught on to Milsurp. I'd post them but I don't want to offend anyone.

Question for you, do you get ur items online or local flea markets?

    Thanks for sharing!

Nice helmet collection Glennsche. Are they all in original condition? They look pretty amazing for their age.

THank you! There are (hopefully!) no "mitchell's mauser" equivalents, if that's what you mean.

much like with the rifles i got, i tend to not get 'em if they're not purdy, but they do need to be originals. the blue French Airforce Adrian helmet above, for example, i passed on a few that looked like crap before getting this one, had to wait. She cost about as much as a perfect mas36.

and the Prussian Cavalry Tschapka ... watched these for months before pulling the trigger on this one. Took forever to find one that was nice and original and in good shape and didnt cost as much as an SVT Sniper!

helmet collecting is like collecting k98s or m1 carbines... its crazy how many different variants, how many different liners, chin straps, etc get in the way and affect price and collectibility. Frankly it can get kinda silly.

the imperial german stuff and 3rd reich helmets especially have produced very robust fake/repro markets. THe mitchels mausers equivalents in pickelhauben and german ww2 helmts are everywhere and have become very hard to spot. its easier to find good guns than good helmets for sure.

I hope that 41 Lithgow you sold me helped add to this collection. Beautiful pieces! They look new.

Are you still planning on moving abroad like you told me? That would seem to be the most compelling reason to sell your rifles.....

Did you get some historical machetes, or "machetes of the world" collection so you have some sort of zombie back up plan?

I dig helmets, although I personally wouldn't sell guns to buy them.

Impulse bought a cool repro Wehrmacht helmet
Graduated to an apparently real Luftwaffe that turned out to be a fugazi
Added a cool USGI WWII K-Pot. Hopefully it isn't fake too..

                (I mean, S-pot.)

Awesome stuff though Glenn, very cool!

No, I was wondering if you had to scavenge some missing parts or if some pieces were restored. I have no problems with either of those, especially restoration which helps stabilize and preserve the pieces.

Wow those are nice, congrats. I would like to own a few old Military helmets. Difference being, i would be OK with having fakes/re-pops. Where would i search for a great re-pop.
