    Another K98

I finally broke down a couple of weeks ago and picked up a K98. While I should have bought one many years ago when they were cheap, I cleverly managed to wait until even the lowly RC rifles have risen to command a fair amount of money.

This particular one was picked up from the local Armslist. What attracted me to it was the fact that the chickens hadn't been punched and the bore is excellent. I certainly didn't get any kind of deal on it, but I like that I was able to inspect it before I coughed up the dough.

1939, 42 code (Mauser, Oberndorf), matching receiver, barrel and stock. Other than that it is a total mixmaster.

Since I just have to have the proper bayonet for my guns that take them (I'm sick like that), a few days ago I found this bayonet and picked it up. While there was some surface rust on the scabbard, the rest of it is in beautiful condition. The only bluing loss on the blade is from sliding in and out of the scabbard. The frog is in decent condition and is very well marked. The story was that it belonged to the sellers grandfather. I didn't pay for the story however, and got it for a decent price

I'm not sure this is the original stock for the rifle. Those numbers you pictured were added post war and most Mauser Oberndorf stocks in 1939 were walnut, rather than the laminate that this one shows. You should post pictures of the other side of the butt stock (proof marks) and the keel (bottom of butt between grip and buttplate). The keel would be numbered if original and unsanded.

I would bet my bottom dollar that it isn't the original stock. I am sure that it is a RC that, for some reason, didn't get the "X" above the serial number and they forgot to punch out the swastikas. It doesn't bother me though, once everything else is no longer original to the rifle, what does it matter?

All of the R.C.'s have a different stock on them. The Germans numbered them on the bottom behind the pistol grip. When the Russian rebuilt them, I am sure they dipped them ten, twenty in at a time. After it was pull a stock from a barrel, bolt, etc. and get the electric pencil ready.

Nothing at all wrong with a RC, unless you paid original rifle prices..

Nah, I got it for the low end of the going rate for a RC.

I think you did well. People gobble them up at $450 and $500.

That's a pretty good deal highpower. I would be jumping all over that for a nice looking shooter.

That bayonet frog is more interesting to me than the RC K98 - which is also nice, BTW
Nice find - The best I can come up with at the moment, is a Luftwaffe summer helmet with the same factory inscription, and also a leather Luftwaffe belt stamped in a similar manner.

That's interesting. I wonder if that manufacturer only made stuff for the Luftwaffe.

Neat rifle, and you got it at a good price. Regardless of the stock being a replacement, at least it is a correct flat butt for that year of rifle. The nicely aligning edges of the butt plate to the wood suggest the stock hasn't been badly sanded or warped or shrunk or whatever.

Even without the 'x' the cold dipped rough finish is classic RC. The rifle would have originally had a lovely blued finish. Shoot, enjoy, repeat!
