    Need help with SKS

I was sorting through the safe and saw that my russian sks needs some TLC. I was away from home for the past 4yrs and probably opened my safe 3 times in that span. I messed up and didn't properly clean and lube the sks before storing it. Needless to say, my neglect resulted in some damage to this beautiful rifle.
I would appreciate if the Calguns community could recommend gunsmithing/cleaning services in the LA/OC area to help me. Thanks.

Judging by your pics, the SKS looks to be a non refurbed specimen. Excellent piece and would probably fetch $850 or so in pristine shape.

I know next to nothing about metallurgy and un-rusting firearms, but I recently rescued an Arisaka that had much more rust and frecking than your SKS. A few hours of labor and gentle oil bath and light scrubbing with a non-abrasive wool took it all right off. Most of what I see here is light freckling that will leave no trace or pitting once removed.

P.S. Good luck with the handguard. It is a PITA.

Break down to metal and use bronze wool and lots of oil. Careful on stamps and corners.

            Hose down with mineral spirits.

Kroil is your friend. Wipe it on, let it sit overnight, then wipe it off in the morning with a cloth. Most of it will probably come off with very little scrubbing. If some of the rust is a bit more stubborn, rub it with gun oil and edge of a nickel. It won't damage the bluing and will look good once you're done. If necessary use bronze wool and oil but it probably won't come to that.

Thank you Calguns community for the feedback. I guess this will be my 4th of July project.
I am leaning toward first trying the Kroil method. If I go with the soaking in oil method, what kind of oil should I soak the metal in? Should I use this?

Regarding the gas tube, I need help. I've tried and bent several punches trying to remove the pin that locks the furniture. I'm sure that I need someone with expertise to help with this step. Any recommendations?

The tapered head is usually driven AWAY from the bolt. Two hands are better than one, if you've got a helper. It looks worse than it is. But say 10 Hail Mary's and Kroil soak. PAX

I Have posed the same question and the consensus is it needs to be drilled out.

Yeah, that pin typically needs to be drilled out.

I have one SKS that came with the pin missing. The gas tube and handguard fits tight enough so that you really don't even need the pin.

Makes it real easy to change the handguard.

I just hope your bore is in good shape (looks dark) just in case you shot it with corrosive ammo and let it sit. If so, then you have even more work to do...

Why didn't you buy a golden rod heating rod... A 20 dollar purchase would have prevented this.
