    M39 extractor has me puzzled.

I bought an M39 from the last Classic batch sometime in may, just got it in my possession about a week ago.. Now I love tinkering with my guns, just to smooth any of the rough spots out (Purists calm down, I in no way bubba'd this!)

Cleaned it really good (my first true milsurp that isn't an AK), did the whole power drill/20 ga brush in the chamber and all that thorough stuff..

And this is where it gets weird, So the bolt was a TAD sticky, with no rounds in the gun I couldn't move it with just two fingers and a little pressure (which is my goal btw), but I could do it with reasonable force (I know I know, it's a battle rifle I should hit the bolt like it owes me money). So I loosened the front retaining screw on the magazine about a half turn or so, which helped marginally. I could atleast feel a slight difference. Now I haven't shot this gun yet, but I did load a few rounds to function test it and see if it fed/ejected them to my liking... I understand, it's dumb to load live rounds I know, please don't hem me up, but it was for science and pointed in a safe direction, fingers well away from the trigger, etc etc.

It would tend to lock up slightly on some of the rounds, and the extractor wouldn't quite get over the rim or would be a real BEAR to close the bolt. Not every round mind you, but say one or two out of every 10 cycles. So I turned my attention to the extractor, which was bent in rather noticeably, the back of the extractor head was not flush with the rim of the bolt head.. So I removed the extractor and got it absolutely, perfectly straight. Woo hoo, high fives all around right? Hammered it back it, then I could not get the bolt to chamber at all, I had to use a rubber mallet at first to get it to lock in place as if it was chambering, Or use a helluva lot more force.. Puzzled and fairly agitated I slightly tapped it and bent it in a tad bit closer to how it was before I started tinkering. Sanded the burrs on the extractor Now it runs smoother then ever. But I mean my extractor is noticeably bent inward.

I still need to make this old girl talk and see how she performs!!

Does anyone have a odd M39 like this, where the extractor needs to be inward for it to run smoothly?? I can't complain, honestly, but after a range report next week I'll see how she holds up..

The M/N extractor isn't supposed to be perfectly straight....so there's your problem lol

Really?! Man, I watched so many youtube videos, and google image searches...

Is there a certain orientation they should be, or does it vary rifle to rifle, some bend in slightly for proper function vs some maybe bend out slightly.

I'm worried if I ever need to replace the extractor finding that sweet spot may prove to be rather troublesome

        Small update*
When the bolt is cocked and open I cannot close it with my finger on the trigger to release the firing pin, it will not go past the 45 degree angle and I can't hammer it down when the bolt has been decocked, that has changed since I have been messing with the extractor.. Hmm the more I mess with this the more confused I get lol

Are you sure you're not putting the cocking piece in the safety notch? Get a new extractor. They're not expensive. Fleabay has them all the time.
Where are you located? I can help you with the rifle.

Located in the Chula Vista area of SoCal. I did order a new extractor. I would upload photos, but it won't let me use my cell. I will upload some later on today.

Check to see if your magazine box is sitting too high for the bolt sticking issue.

Correctable with shims on the stock between it and trigger guard.

Before I removed the extractor I could close it while pulling the trigger no problem.. It would almost certainly have to be caused by the extractor. When I straightened the extractor out keep in mind I could barely even close the bolt let alone release the firing pin. After bending it inward a bit, it closes just fine and is pretty smooth, but cant uncock it while closing.

Are you sure the bolt is assembled correctly? Bolt head, body and connector bar all aligned properly? Did you remove the trigger and/ sear?

I didn't dare disassemble the trigger and sear lol. Bolt and everything are A-OK, everything is where it should be

alright so after forcing it a couple times it seems to have resolved itself oddly enough...

I basically had one hand on the bolt and the other on the trigger through this little process. I would push the bolt past the first stage and push it into battery, while squeezing the trigger at the same time, i did this a handful of times and now I can decock it, like normal.. You know I think I'll just deal with smacking it like it owes me money, instead of fine tuning this sweet old finn.. lol

alright maybe I'll polish the bolt with some Brasso before that... haha!
Thanks guys for the help and insight, my biggest passion is guns and gunsmithing, as amatuer as I am now, most of what this young buck has learned has been from various salty dogs online! (no offense)

Looks like guy had same issue... On an M39. Your extractor looks bent too far in.

Hello fellow mosin-ites! Small time lurker here; I've never had anything to say before so I would just drop by to stare at the pretty pictures and pick up helpful tips from others. Tonight, however, while doing some work on my M39 I figured I would take the extractor out of my bolt head and give...

Needs to look more like this.

That's what I initially tried, but after making it straight I couldn't close the bolt, it wouldn't budge.. Only when i bent it slightly in would it run smoothly, still need to shoot it for function and I bought a spare head and extractor in case it's just a crap extractor.
