M1 Carbine Value....

Hey guys,

A friend of mine wants to sell his Winchester M1 Carbine. I offered to get him a second opinion, so I am putting it up for you guys to take a look at. Serial puts it a around 1943/44 I believe. I gave him a 750-850 value as a shooter, but I offered to get a second opinion.


Anyway, the receiver, barrel and bayonet mount/sling band have been blued. All other parts are in their original condition. Looks to be a post-War rebuild to me. It has the milled rear-sight, which is nice. The stock is in excellent condition except for a repair, in which a plug was put into the bottom of the forearm. Bore is dirty, but that is dust. It looks excellent and should clean nicely.

It comes with a Vietnam-era sling and an original 1943 magazine pouch.

It has little collector value, as it's been buffed polished and blued...The stock has been heavily sanded.

Maybe I'm behind on pricing, but I think 500 tops as a shooter...

I think you are about right on the range being 750-850 if it is not import marked. If the barrel is original, maybe on the high side of the range, not original barrel, low side.

I think $750+ is way too high for that gun considering it has been pimp-shined. I would say $600-$650 max. That may be generous.

Were is a Winchester mix-master in original finish, $800 would be a "good friend" price.

Blued and polished makes it at best a $400-$500 shooter.

I would say $625 - $675 .......... the finish is nothing that bead blasting and a parkerization tank can't "fix". If it is import marked then it takes another $100 hit in price. I passed on a Saginaw in April for $675 that was stock except for the sporterized stock.

It's value now is as a shooter with the blue job. I'd say $500-600 if it's in otherwise excellent shape and not import marked.

This is true. Pimp shined = less value.

I would still buy it for $500 though because I think it looks good.

Thanks for all the input guys. I will go at about $600-650 for the rifle itself, I thought M1 Carbines were selling for a bit more, guess the market is different right now. He had some other things I am looking up and I will get him a total assement.

Though, how can one tell how bad the stock has been sanded? Doesn't look like much as been done to it, besides the repair. Still has the "P" on the grip for rebuild and it doesn't look to have been touched.

I don't think its so much that the market is different, its that the receiver/barrel has been polished and blued. That kind of modification is non reversible. I'd say about 500-600 if you want to move it. I personally pass over anything that's been extensively modified unless it was so cheap I'd be crazy to not buy.

Today at a Gun show I show two m1carbine made by IBM both was price at $600 not bad for the price plus it's way better than the Big5 version. Sorry did take any photos of it. But if I go again tomorrow I'll take a photo to show you guys but if not than I'm sorry
