    Colt SAA 44-40 Question

    Hello fellow SAA lovers,
Does anyone know if a.44 special, or a 44 mag round can be used in a gun chambered in 44-40? Please advise and thanks for your time.

    44 40

Not at all. Won't chamber correctly and if it did would blow up the weapon

.44-40 is a completely different cartridge. It's tapered like a rifle cartridge.

If you don't reload, you will if you buy a .44-40. I personally like it, but cases are thin and easily damaged if not handled with care.

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

I think Mike Venturio (American Handgunner) had an article that talked about a cylinder swap to shoot 44 spl out of a 44-40. 44 mag probably not a good idea.

If you are in LA I have a lot of 44-40, too. I have a Winchester 1892 (my favorite rifle) but got carried away with the ammo.

You can do it ONCE, IF you can get it chambered. As previously mentioned, it is a bottle neck, not straight wall cartridge.

Alot of people have trouble and are scared of reloading 44 WCF

I have ruined a total of 1 case since I started reloading it. Just work slowly and use Starline Brass. All other Brass sucks. It is way to expensive to buy it.. If I did not reload,I could not shoot it.. I think I reload it for around 8 or 9 Bucks a 50 round box. To buy it will run upwards of 40.00.
