FN-FAL - getting parts kit - any hints?

Hello all,

I just ordered a parts kit for an IMBEL FAL - I also ordered a DSA Type I receiver (with no cut). I've got a 10 round magazine that I plan to attach, and I'm getting a stripper clip dust cover.

Are these little monsters hard to put together? I didn't have too much trouble with my AR (but everything was new - and I didn't have to headspace, since it was already barreled).

I'd say the main thing would be try and get it timed right when you screw the barrel in. And make sure you have the handguard ring on the barrel before you screw it into the receiver. You're going to need a barrel wrench and receiver wrench too. Here's mine, I just shot it for the first time 2 or so weeks ago.

There is a lot more to it than an AR, but much easier (maybe not easier, but faster) than an AK build.

Assuming you read up on everything on FAL files? it's not bad at all.
Best to not skimp and get all the correct tools. Headspacing is VERY easy as long as you do it right... buy the pin set! Building only one with all the tools may not be worth it, but it is fun.

FAL's are the second best fun you can have. As already said, do what you have to to get the barrel to time between 1030 and 11 o'clock. Email me if you like if you have questions. See if anyone near you on the fal board has tools and can help.

Get ready to build your 2nd, 3rd, etc.

Yes - I'm getting the AGI video - and I'm looking for a good FAL book right now - been spending a lot of time at falfiles.com - too.

I like my AR - but I also like the power of my Mauser - so this should be a nice mix (powerful autoloader).

I live on the peninsula, you can borrow what I have:

Headspace gages & locking shoulder pin set

You'll need to get a receiver wrench, I've been using wood ones that haven't worked too great for me lately. I overtimed by barrel just a tad and I need to push it back, but havent been able to without a real wrench. Been meaning to get one, but I'm broke. . .

Besides that, you'll only need a strong vise and workbench and a wrench to fit on the barrel flats. I'm in Oakland at least a couple times a week, PM me if you wanna hook up. . .when your DSA shows up in 2 months!

Don't forget you need 7 US made parts to legally put the rifle together.

Considering your Imbel kit will look like it was dragged over rocks for the past 20 years (if mine was anything to judge by) 3 easy decision parts to swap out will be buttstock, pistol grip and handguards.

Your receiver will count as one, so you still need 3. Most people buy either DSA or Falcon hammer, trigger and sear sets.

Your Imbel comes with a combination grenade launcher/flash hider. That's got to go. Luckily the Phoenix PML4 flash hider is pretty cool looking, and counts as another US made part.

So you will wind up with 8 US made parts, enough to cover you legally if it turns out one part was actually made in Mexico or something.

Put it all together, and this is what you have:



That is my second FAL this year. I paid Rich at CGW Guns to put both together for me though.

It was the last camo rifle Rich Saunders of CGW is going to do. It is a CeraKote finish, he used to do his camo projects with Duracoat, this was a one off.

Yes it is a sweet rifle. Expensive, but I feel it was worth it.
