Yes, Thompsons do fall under the AW law based on their features. They are not listed by name. The ability to accept detachable mags, combined with the pistol grip(s), means they are AW's under SB23.

You'd need to either make it a fixed 10 round or less magazine rifle, or get rid of the pistol grip(s) if you wanted it to be legal in California.

Yep. Illegal AW unless you remove the pistol grip, make it single action somehow (use the charging handle to chamber a fresh round each time) or fix a 10 round mag in place. Since its a M1A1 it shouldn't have the forward grip that would also be another issue for you...

I'm sure that you are storing it in accordance with all aplicable laws though so that this won't be an issue, right? I'm sure that you just remove the screw holding the pistol grip in place and pulled off the grip, right?

In standard configuration it is an AW under CA law. The two ways to make them complaint are locking the magazine (kinda iffy in some peoples opinion) or eliminating the pistol grip. Since you plan on using the 30 round mags you can't go with option 1 because that too would make it an instant AW. So you would be left making a "fin grip" for the rifle if you choose to shoot it with the 30 rounders.

It's not all that difficult to make a new grip for it. You can search for my thompson thread where I have a wooden fin grip on it.

An M1A1 does not have the vertical foregrip.

Remove your pistol grip RIGHT NOW if it isn't removed already. Once that is done, the M1A1 is 100% legal in CA. They are sold at gun shows (CWS if I remember right had them).

                You have 3 options-

                1. leave the pistol grip off (and try not to cut yourself while shooting- this can be done).

                2. Make a wedge for the grip to block the thumb- it then becomes 'gripless' like a monster man. Or, make your own gripless grip for it (much more work).

                3. Fix the magazine to the gun (10 roun mag only please). Since you own 30 rounders, this is probably your least attractive option.

Auto Ordnance sells new pistol grips if you don't want to butcher yours. Easiest way would be to cut the grip in half, wedge a thick piece of kydex in between (with extra material in back to block the thumb) , glue it, then secure with screws, trim kydex to fit, and you're ready to go shoot gripless!
