I am sure that is a great technique, but I used up all my nickels as 50 yard low light pistol targets and toss in the air trickshot fodder. Quarters would have made it too easy.

Ok moved on to the final problem areas starting with the trigger guard which turned out to be the most stubborn area on the whole rifle

I tried the nickel trick, bronze wool, and a bronze brush. Trigger came out good but the trigger guard definitely has some pitting and discoloration

The receiver cleaned up well. There is still some pitting/discoloration but only noticeable at just the right angle/glare

This was a fun project. The rifle appears to be unissued and unfired. Bore is mirror bright and the action is buttery smooth.

For $300 and some elbow grease I'm very happy with it and I think it will make a fine shooter. After I take it to the range I'll take it down again and give it a good scrubbing and probably try a little more treatment on the trigger guard.

Nice!! Using the "nickel" is labor intensive, but you don't have to use any bluing afterwards to repair the rust damage, it sort of is like magic. The rust leaves and the bluing comes forward...

Spread it out over a few days and basically did it all at my desk taking breaks from work
