    Cs zavodyia Vyrobjzbpait Brno?

Gents, I need some help identifying this rifle. It belongs to my grandfather and he has had it for 50+ years, I think. He doesn't know the actual name of it. The front sight is busted and I'm trying to get a replacement for him. What's on the title is what I could make out, out of the stamp that it has on the receiver. It is chambered in 30-06. Pics are posted below. Thanks in advance.

Probably obvious so far but looks like some kind of Czech Mauser VZ24 converted from 8mm to 30-06 sporterized ... mauser action with a dressed up bolt...rebarrel maybe with a new stock... not sure... but the site may be anything you want it to be for replacement if it was truly custom.

I don't know, but am going to throw a WAG out there and say it is a tricked out rebarelled mauser.
If it was a snake, it would have bit me.

It is a Mauser 98 type action made at CZ in BRNO in the former Czechoslovakia.

It may have originally been a military rifle, based on the stripper clip guide and thumb slot on the left side of the action.

For the front sight, I would spend some time poking through the Brownells catalog.

What is marked on the left side of the receiver ring and action rail?

Thanks gents for the quick replies.

            Emcon5,
I'm not sure what is on the left side of the receiver. The only other marking I remember was a group of numbers which I assumed were the serial number.

Its a Czech large ring Mauser 98.

Czech mauser actions are often sought after for custom builds.

You have aftermarket sights on it so just measure the height of the base and blade and check the attaching screw(s) sizes and then check http://www.newenglandcustomgun.com/ or Brownells for a replacement.

I consulted with my military history staff and they concluded the gold plated bolt is not original to the rifle.

Very probably a custom job for a US serviceman serving in Germany during the Cold War done by a German gunsmith on a wartime K98 action, or a prewar CZ action among those confiscated by the Nazis and then by us. There are a fair number of these inexpensive sporters knocking around the US that were brought back when the ownes finished their service.

But it may be a rifle made by a US smith on the same action. The only thing I see that is unusual about it is the gold plating....weird.

No reason this couldn't be an excellent hunting rifle if a gunsmith checks it out. Are there any Waffenampt acceptance stamps anywhere on it? If it was made on a Nazi-issued action, there still should be one someplace; they usually didn't take the time to "scrub" them all.
