Can someone help me identify this rifle?

I am trying to help a friend identify a rifle. I know almost nothing about it other than it is chambered in .308, at least that is what he has told me.

Looks like a Spanish 1916 mauser made after the Spanish Civil War, based on the lack of a crest.

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

I never said I bought anything.
This was given to a friend by his Grandfather who had the rifle for decades. Neither of them know what it is and he asked me if I could help him figure it out. I came here to ask for help.

It is a Spanish 1916. Originally in 7mm Mauser. Converted to .308 Looks to be in poor condition. I'm not really keen on shooting. 308 8n a small ring Mauser.

It's a piece of crap, put together from spare parts by bubba. You should just give it to me for proper disposal.

                    Sorry, not sorry.

As the others have said, it is a Spanish M1916 rifle. They converted most of these to 7.62 NATO. So while .308 fits in it, the pressures are on the high side for that particular action. The bolts on most of these guns don't match for various reasons. The most common being that during the Spanish Civil War, they stored the rifles and bolts separately. When the various armories fell to different groups, it never occurred to most of them to check serial numbers. They simply slapped bolts in them and put them into action. After the war, when they were rebuilding the rifles, they would do large batches of guns at a time, and put the parts in bins, pulling out whatever was needed, with no regard for numbers either. So while the rifle may be a rebuild made from parts, it could very well have come out of the rearsenal/rebarrel process like that.

The barrels muzzle should have a caliber stamping and importer on it if been converted to 7.62 Cetme but may say .308 Win. PAX
