I use Buck Emmert's Lube Formula (for black powder)

    1750 grains Beeswax
    1368 grains Crisco Shortening (White)
328 grains Crisco or Wesson Vegatable Oil

This recipe makes 1/2 pound lubricant. If you tray lube as I do, you'll probably
    want to double the recipe.
I also now substitute Anhydrous lanolin for the vegatable oil.

At the range, using a light load of IMR 4198 and 405 grain cast/lubed bullets, I was only able to get about an 8-12 inch group at 100 yards.
I've seen many barrels much worse, that shot much better. Are those store bought 405s? I would suggest you slug your barrel and start load developement with a properly fitting bullet.

Just a suggestion, because you didn't mention.

The barrel looks good to me. The last few inches are the most critical. Seconds on slugging the barrel. That bore should shoot very well with properly fitting bullets.

Most trapdoors are way over sized and you need black powder and soft alloy bullets so they will upset to grab the rifling .It will foul quick but that's the way it will shoot the best .

This is what I bought last year:

                  It connects to a computer.
The smart phone version looks pretty handy but it don't see one for an iPhone.

Good idea on the dowel rod to reflect the light.

Useful nonetheless. I used it to inspect the water passages of a BMW, that was nice.
