    CR: Worth it?

I was wondering how hard it is to get a CR license and if it would be worth it for what I want to do. Basically, I want to purchase 50+ year old rifles and put a modern stock/scope on them making them a little more shootable for target and perhaps hunting. Would the CR be a good way to go?

Also, other then the Mosin, which other rifles would be easy and cheap platforms for the conversion. If the rifle can be bought for under 300.00 I am not concerned about historical significance. I already have a historically accurate Garand and what other rifle from any other country could be as important?......so again, I am not trying to preserve history.

For target or hunting, buy a new rifle purpose made for those. I'm sure there are cheap ones out there. Buying a Mosin, adding a new stock, mount and scope kinda defeats the purpose of a cheap hunting/target rifle.

I have a mosin and with the iron sights I shoot better then anything modern I have.....I can get more mosin for 150.00 and another stock for 60.00, so without the taxs/fees, I am doing alright I would say....I appreciate the advice, anyone else on CR would be of a benefit?

          CR: Worth it?

Another thing to try on the mosin is a tripod. Also A4 carry handle is nice for long treks, just weld it directly to the receiver. Glue on a $5 laser pointer and you got precision accuracy up to the end of the muzzle.

If you really want to separate yourself from the pack, try adding a surefire flashlight for use when clearing out buildings.

The lee enfields are very fast to cycle the bolt
Mausers are bulletproof and your best choice for a custom build
The list goes on and on.... Almost any ww1 boot action rifle is a must own!

Who says you can't target shoot or hunt with an original Mosin?

I understand you aren't concerned with preserving the history, but you could buy a Mosin for around $150, spend $100 "modernizing" it, & end up with a $100 Mosin. If that is your goal, I wouldn't bother with a C&R license. People who go through the trouble of getting a C&R license do it to collect older rifles to preserve & enjoy their history, not to modify them.

You could get something like a Ruger American for under $400 & have a great target/hunting rifle that is more suited for upgrading rather than a military surplus rifle.

Unfortunately the days of cheap surplus rifles has passed. Most of the old rifles will be north of $300 and the cost to modernize them isn't really worth it. You'll have more invested in the rifle than what it would be worth. Look for a modern rifle that is already set up to be a hunting or target rifle, you'll be happier in the end.

You're better off not paying for a C&R license and COE for your purposes, just go thru an 01 FFL.

Unless you'll be buying multiple rifles, going thru an 01 FFL will be the least expensive option for you. The 03 isn't hard to get and not very expensive, but in CA without a COE it's usefulness is very limited.

You can also buy a CR rifle that is not millitary. Lile an old hunting rifle. If you have a COE and and an 03 ffl, you can avoid the 50 bucks an 01 ffl charges to recive an online sale. But if you keep your eyes out, you probably can find a deal that is as good. At least on an old rifle. Plus if it already has a scope, thats another 50 to 100 bucks u save vs a sporter. Practice general rifle skill with the iron sites and surplis mo on your mosin. Then zero the scope on the uswd savage from the pawn shop with 10 rounds and take the others hunting.

for c and r guns its not worth making them into sporters if you plan to buy them leave them the same down the line the price might rise.
retreat! we must go comrade we will fight again another day.

If you clear background to buy a gun, you can get the 03FFL.
                            $33 every 3 years.

With the new laws though, you really need the California COE to take full advantage of the benefits of the 03FFL.
That COE is going to cost $22/year, and the initial application requires a Livescan, so it's going to be about $100 initially.

Ok, Thank you, I appreciate all the advise....I do intend to buy mulitiple rifles, maybe 5 or 10....
I will pass a background check, no problem there. I already have rifles that are historically accurate, so I am not too concerned about that aspect of future purchases, I will hack away if warranted, yes, I do realize that may devalue the firearm, I am ok with that.....
What is COE for? Again, I intend to buy older rifles online, out of state and wish for these rifles to be sent directly to my house. I wont be dealing in firearms, simply desire to save money on ffl transfers on these older guns, thank you
