Most Authentic Replica Pennsylvania and Hawken Rifles

While not a true Hawken replica, the Lyman Great Plains is very authentic as a plains type rifle. Steel mountings and butt plate, large caliber, very rugged. A true Hawken had more brass fittings. The only real difference is the Lyman has a 15/16" barrel, while the originals tended to be 1" or 1-1/16" across the flats. The Lyman also has coil springs, but what ever you shoot with it won't know that.Comment

Kentucky rifles or more properly, Pennsylvania rifles fall into schools of design based on the county they were made in and who made them and when. The Lancaster school is one of the classic divisions (Bucks county, Allentown are two others). Within the Lancaster school you have Rupp, Haines and others who made the classically beautiful rifles. I have a replica of an Isaac Haines he built around 1770. These rifles typically had Germanic locks, Swamped barrels, and excized carvings on the stock. The golden age rifles which were built between 1780-1830 had thinner stocks and generally smaller bores. Straight barrels (not swamped) became more common during this period. TOTW, Chambers, Pecatonica all make excellent versions in kit form and Chambers, TVM make finished rifles. Expect to pay 2-4k for such a rifle.Comment
