That serial number should be a .38 Military & Police 1st Model, the first of the K-frame S&W .38 Special revolvers that eventually evolved into the Model 10. Made between 1899 and 1902.Revolvers are not pistols
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel

There is a spring kit available https://www.gunsprings.com/index.php...mID=58&dID=264
Revolvers have somewhat complicated actions so it isn't as simple to change springs as in a typical semiauto. It might be something you would want a competent gunsmith to do. If you want to do it yourself I recommend getting this book to use as a guide http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-to...prod73553.aspx It will show you things such as the correct way to remove the side plate without damaging it. Be sure you save all of the original parts in case you or a future owner want to return it to original configuration.
That revolver is the direct ancestor of probably the most successful and popular line of double action revolvers ever made. It was the first S&W model with a swing-out cylinder in 38 caliber and it also introduced the .38 S&W Special cartridge, probably still the most popular centerfire revolver cartridge in the world. If it's in good condition it is something you should take care of.Revolvers are not pistols
