1903/A3 stock Authenticity Check

Just purchased a stock to restore a Remington 03/A3 and curious if I can get some opinions on authenticity. It has been heavily sanded, that's why the markings are so light. They should look like this.



And the left side of the wrist should look like this.



I personally wouldn't put much time into working a stock that has been so heavily sanded. Just use Citristrip, oil it with flax seed oil, use it for now and keep on the lookout for a better stock.

Milsurp Collector I see what you mean. I should have asked the question prior to purchasing but that's ok. I will find an authentic one later. I needed to change out immediately anyway to address severe deterioration issues. Thank you for the quality feedback and pics. The education is Much appreciated

Is yours a CMP surplus stock that you restored or one that has WWII history. Does a CMP surplus stock reduce authenticity and value?

The pictures I posted were from the web, not from one of my rifles. I have two Remington 03A3's, a Smith Corona 03A3, and a Remington 03A4 sniper rifle but I didn't have pictures of those markings on my rifles handy so I used those web pictures for convenience, but the markings are the same.

There are several types of stocks you might encounter when searching for a replacement stock. One type is inletted for the M1903 only and won't fit your rifle. You don't want one of those stocks, even though it might have nice markings. You need an 03A3 stock.




You might come across one of these stocks



The correct stock for your rifle would be an "S" type Remington 03A3 stock like the one you have, but not heavily sanded. Earlier production stocks would have reinforcing pins and later ones would have screws.

You have a Remington so you want a Remington stock. Smith Corona stocks have a rounded band spring inlet compared to the square Remington inlet.



Smith Corona stocks also don't have the "RA" stamp on the left side of the wrist, and have a slightly larger "P" proof mark.

The "scant" stock and pistol grip "C" stock were used as replacement stocks on Remington 03A3's.

A new CMP "C" replacement stock is obviously not an original part and does not increase collector value, but it might not hurt resale value. I think many people like and prefer the pistol grip "C" stock for shooting, even though it isn't strictly "correct", so it might not hurt resale value.

The third option is simply not to choose one of the other 2 options. In other words, when you see the 2 options shown for the gallery and the exchange, you are in the discussion forum.

Not yet. Testing out my restoration skills on my father's severely rusted JC Higgins shotgun first. I have some rust on his 03A3 that is much less but would hate to do damage. Reading blogs to learn how to remove rust without harming the gun. Will send pics as soon as I restore. Thanks for asking!
