    Long Arisaka Type 99 ?

One of the LGSs has a rifle that the tag says is a 7.7x58 Arisaka Type 99 "Rare" with bayonet - $500. Only problem is that it looks like a Type 38 (long, notched rear sight, etc.). I'm no expert on Japanese rifles but decided to check the bore and tried to see if a 6.5mm bullet would slide into the muzzle ... it didn't.

Have any of you actually seen a long Type 99 Arisaka?

Look at the japanese characters on the rollmark.
A type 38 kinda looks like

While a type 99 looks like:

    nn

Both will be followed by the character for "type" so just look at the first two characters.

IIRC, type 38s are usually vertical, and 99s horizontal as well.

Yeah, the one in this shop is definitely misidentified. The good thing is that the buyer will surely be unable to chamber a 7.7x58 round in this rifle.

There was a long Arisaka Type 99 subtype in 7.7mm. When the first Type 99's were made they were the same length as the Type 38. Then like most countries Japan switched to the short rifle concept.

        I have many Arisakas but I don't have a long Type 99.
        Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

Long 99s aren't common but they do exist.

The first rifle I ever bought was a Type 99 long rifle from the San Francisco Gun Exchange in 1982 for something like 115 bucks out the door.

7.7mm cases I reloaded on the Lee hand loading device will not feed into my short barreled Type 99. So I am guessing the chamber is sloppy on my Long rifle version.

The short hand way that I use to differentiate from a Type 99 and a Type 38 is that the former has one vent hole and the later has two vent holes.
