You mean the steel surplus stuff? Not worth it, although there are crazy people who go to the trouble of reloading them, it can be done. But Berdan primers are a PITA, I'm told that FL resizing steel cases with damage or wear out your dies and the guys I have seen do this have to put a coat of wax on the steel to keep it from rusting. To summarize: can it be done? Sure. Should you? Only if you have spare time to burn and don't really care that you are wasting more time and money to reload a round that can still be bought new in the cans for a lot cheaper. .311-.313 bullets are expensive, the case is large and takes a lot of powder, Berdan primers are available but tough to find the right size, etc. As long as I have plenty of spam cans laying around, I will never reload this round, even the 400 rounds of brass Prvi I have, not until the spam cans are cleaned out. I bought the spam can stuff for .15-18 per round, it would cost triple that to reload it. Mosins are fun but not worth reloading for most.Last edited by Capybara; 12-04-2015, 2:14 PM.NRA Certified Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor, Shotgun Instructor and Range Safety Officer

Definitely don't bother with the steel cases unless you're trying to make a point / YouTube video.
If you have some boxer primed brass cases you might as well keep them. I load 54R occasionally. But I load enough similar C&R calibers that I don't have to keep any extra components around - just had to pick up some dies and I got 100-200 reloadable cases. Means I can shoot it without cleaning after and it's tuned to a specific M39 so I can use it as kind of a sleeper rifle - looks pretty much like any Mosin to the uninitiated and is as accurate as any period bolt action.
Then again I bought a lot of surplus while it was cheap and easily available. I think you'll see more people reloading it down the road. So you might as well keep any good brass (again, not the steel, and Berdan primers in general are a pain).Comment

if you have a reloader friend it might be worth asking if he wants them for free; but otherwise they have little value due to the extra work of using them.
I reload them once or twice but they're meant to be my disposables. I'll shoot them when I'm getting tired of picking up brass and leave them at the range some of the time.
I just drill through the berdan primer and bottom of the case to make a boxer hole. Then I use my pocket resizer meant for cleaning up mil crimps to size what's left of the old primer to the right size to hold a boxer primer. I usually then super glue the new primer in place for a good seal.... pretty easy... but not worth buying when brass cases are available for reloading....Comment

I wouldn't bother.
100 cases from Grafs are $50, 100 bullets are another ~$26, plus $8 shipping, for ~$84. Add another $3 for 100 primers, and another ~$15-20 for 2/3 of a can of powder.
From SG Ammo, 5 boxes of loaded ammo are $69.75, with $12.00 shipping for a total of $81.75.
Just buy the ammo and save the brass.Comment

And try shooting a long range military bolt rifle match with it at Pala - and come out in last place...I wouldn't bother.

If your cases are boxer primed brass they have some value. I load all my ammo for my Hex Finn and do really well with it on the 500 meter rams.sigpic NRA Life Since 1986

Who said anything about matches?
The Privi heavy ball shoots pretty well, about the same as the Yugo heavy surplus in my PU (not suprising, they probably came from the same factory). Not quite as good as my handloads, but better than the steel cased surplus stuff.
And I wasn't saying not to reload, I was just saying buy ammo rather than cases, you will come out a little ahead for the first loading.
But hey, if you want to pay more, knock yourself out.Comment

its blaster ammo the first time around... for $26.
then you reload it.
I always just buy complete ammo to get 54r brass...Comment

If I have to buy brass cased boxer primed ammo for the mosin I save the brass as its worth .25 cents a round. Haven't in a cool minute though since I've been shooting yugo surplus and red army standard copper jacketed. I've traded my brass several times here on cal guns for surplus or non corrosive steel case ammo.

What a waste. They make great wind chimes. Sometimes when the wind blows just right I swear you can faintly hear the red army childrens chior singing.Calguns- redacted more than Hillarys bengazi emails.

Or you can make necklaces out of them!
Nothing says "Merry-Christmas" like a necklace made from surplus shell cases!"The only thing necessary for the triumph [of evil] is for good men to do nothing." Edmund Burke speech of 23 April 1770, "Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents," delivered to the House of Commons.Comment
