My first Lee-Enfield

Today i bought a Lee Enfield, it is a Mk5 No 1 with a believe about a 20" barrel with the condition being fairly good for a military rifle. I have a couple of questions about these rifles.

1st, how do i figure out the date of these?

2nd, it comes with a sling, is there a way to tell if its original or not?

3rd, i dont have pictures yet, but i will take some on Monday but what are the value on one of the "Jungle Carbines"? just a range. I just want to know if i got a good deal or not.

And last question, how can i tell if it is legit or fake? I dont know why people would fake them but i was told there are fakes out there.

If you're a normal enfield junkie, it won't be your last.
The month/date should be electro penciled on the left side of the receiver like this xx/xx. Can't remember if there's anything on the butt stock socket. Sorry, can't really help with the rest.

I have several Enfields, the No 5 is my absolute favorite shooter, hands down. In my humble opinion, it is just about the handiest bolt gun ever made.

Please don't alter it in any way. Use that excellent flip up peep sight.
And if you need to sell it....PM me first. I wouldn't mind having another.

i will never alter any milsurp! I try to buy bubbad ones to save and i will let you know! I'm not fully sold on it, ill hit the range and see how i like it

Congratulations on your purchase, Enfields are great fun to collect and shoot.

I don't think any of the questions you posed can be answered accurately without pictures and knowing what you paid for it.

Congrats, I'm sure after shooting it you'll want to collect all the Enfields.

The date should be stamped on the buttstock socket or on the left side of the receiver. As for price, they are typically found at $400-$500+.

There are many fakes out there. Here are few easy things to look for:
Lightening cuts to the barrel and receiver.
There should be a gap between the receiver and the ladder peep sight.
The ladder peep sight is only graduated to 800 yards.
The trigger guard should have a thinner profile, is milled and has a wasp waist front tang.
The bolt handle should be hollowed out.

I am a rookie to the Enfield but I have three and can tell you that the only minor sticking point is that there isn't super cheap abundant ammo. You can still buy quality PPU ammo for well under $1 per round though and I don't think most people beat up Enfields like they would with AR / AK's.

Super smooth action.
Lovely European styling and great wood.
Superior sight picture.
Moderate recoil / high accuracy.
Tons of wartime history and lineage.
A bargain for the price / build quality. Comparable to Swiss rifles IMHO.

No 5 mk 1. There are quite a few ways to spot a fake JC but some were made so well that you have to know all the differences from a no 5 and a no 4. One of the most important components and dead giveaway is the barrel. They shaved many metal components of the rifle and most notable are the fluted shavings on the barrel near the chamber. Does yours have a hollow bolt handle, lug on flash hider?

I'll have pictures tomorrow night after work, i'm excited. I threw on a Specso 20 gauge 28" single shot, shotgun to the dros.

But i will give you guys all the info and pictures tomorrow, this is my first enfield and im pretty pumped, the action was very smooth, thats for sure! Ammo looks to be a little on the high side, i'm use to x54r for the mosins and TIGR, but i will survive haha.

The cutdown left wall on the receiver is the easiest tell-tale sign for a #5.

The now defunct Victoria Trading sold a quantity of modified #4s into #5s stamped 'CYP' which was taken to indicate Cyprus but had nothing to do with that island nation. Good shooters but no collector value.
